Cape Girardeau, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks of southern Missouri. The population was 3,539 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cape Girardeau-Jackson County, Missouri Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white person to set foot on what is now Cape Girardeau was Alexander McNaught in 1804. The town was founded by General John Capps and his wife, Ann Purdy Capps, in 1865 as a trading post on the Arkansas River between Cape Girardeau and Jefferson City. In 1870, the Post Office moved from its original location to what is now First National Bank building (now operated by Regions Financial). In 1914, when the former site of First National Bank burned down, the town renamed itself after General George Armstrong Custer during World War I commemorating his service with United States cavalry in Europe. The city was founded in 1835 by a group of men who were looking for a location to build a steamboat company. In addition to its manufacturing importance, Cape Girardeau is also home to the Missouri State Capitol and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. The city's history began with the building of the Cape Girardeau Canal in 1836. This canal connected the Mississippi River and Lake Michigan, which helped to make Cape Girardeau an important transportation center. Over time, other businesses popped up in Cape Girardeau, such as hotels and stores. By 1860, the city had become so populous that it decided to incorporate as a municipality. After years of growth, cape girardeausville hit a snag in 1888 when it became apparent that it wasn't possible to build more than one store per block due to lack of space. This led to some physical changes within the city: buildings got taller and denser; streets got wider; and sidewalks were built between buildings.
