Cape Girardeau, Missouri is located in the state of Missouri. It is a city with a population of over 116,000. The first settlement in what is now Cape Girardeau was made by the French in 1763. The town was named after Louis-Jacques Capeyrardeaux, a French general who fought against British forces during the American Revolution. In 1811, the town incorporated and became known as Cape Girardeau City. The city's growth continued during the 19th century until World War I when it reached its peak population of around 151,000 people. However, during World War II the city’s population decreased due to troop movements and war-time restrictions on trade that were placed on Cape Girardeau by the United States government. After the war, Cape Girardeaus economy slowly improved until it reached its current level of prosperity in 2003.
