Cape Girardeau, Missouri is a city in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri, United States. The population was 3,803 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The first European to visit what is now Cape Girardeau was French explorer Pierre Laclède on July 6, 1692. He named the spot "Isle Royale" after King Louis XIV of France and his queen Marie Lesbienne of Spain who had visited it a few weeks earlier on July 4th. The first permanent English settlers in this area were Captain George Dempster and his party that landed on Mayflower Compact in 1676 with hopes of finding new land for England's fledgling colonies. Captain Dempster's men built a small cabin near present day downtown from materials they brought ashore from their shipwrecked voyage. They called the place "Dempster's Harbor". In 1718, when Pontiac Purchase was made by the British as part of their Louisiana Purchase, General James Kundera set out to explore this area which included modern day Cape Girardeau County. After spending two months exploring much of central Illinois he finally reached what is now Cape Girardeau on October 10th while traveling downriver from St Josephs Rapids along the Mississippi River On October 12th he sighted rapids ahead which he thought might be impediments to navigation but upon closer inspection found them to be only natural obstacles caused by shoals of fish that swam between two points on an island in the river mouth about . From this point forward Kundera known as Father Duplessis d'Estrées explored and mapped much of central Illinois before returning downstream to meet Father Marquette at Osage Hills on November 24th where he reported discovering a large body of water lying east-northeastward bordering Onondaga Lake and extending into Wisconsin Territory called Great Lakes Isthmus or Straits Of Mackinac (now Michigan). This discovery led directly to Britain granting Canada possession over these lands as well as Detroit and Niagara Falls In 1819 Augustus Woodward founded The Daily Republican newspaper in cape town and became its editor until his death in 1865 In 1825 David Dixon started an insurance company here which later became AIG In 1833 John Crampton opened The Democratic National Convention here which served as the first national political convention outside Philadelphia In 1861 Union general Ulysses S Grant spent three days visiting this area during his campaign against Confederate general Robert E Lee A post office was established at cape town in 1865 under ZIP code 62236 The city limits were expanded westward by annexing portions of Dunkirk Township (now calculation township)and White City Township (now Mount Vernon Township). In 1899 white farmers burned down several black houses near present day downtown after accusing African Americans living there of being carpetbaggers seeking treasures hidden inside numerous Native American artifacts located within walking distance of white settlers’ homes . ensuing violence left twenty-one people dead including six whites . redrew municipal boundaries without affecting those properties . On February 26nd 1909 voters approved annexation by nearby Parkville due largely to lack thereof other than churches having been destroyed orchards off Third Street since settlement began
