The Missouri Volunteer Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. It was known as the "Cape Girardeau Brigade." The Cape Girardeau Brigade was organized on October 14, 1861, at Cape Girardeau, Missouri, and mustered into service October 16th. The brigade left for Cairo, Illinois on November 1st and arrived there December 12th. The brigade participated in the First Battle of Corinth on December 15th and skirmished with Confederate cavalry near PerryvilleDecember 17th. On January 11th 1862 the brigade march to St Louis, MO and took up winter quarters. On February 9th 1862 they were ordered to Pulaski Heights where they relieved a detachment under General Fremont leading an attack against Confederate works. After suffering heavily from artillery fire they withdrew without taking any prisoners or stores. On March 5th 1862 they moved towards Carbondale which they reached April 3rd which was their first battle during the war. They fought at Pea Ridge April 6-10 and minor engagements at Brentwood April 13-15 before being ordered back to St Louis for winter quarters once again. In May 1862 they were ordered back to Corinth where they participated in Rebel forces attacking Union positions there on June 4th finally withdrawing two days later after heavy losses including one man killed and ten men wounded while attempting to cross a river swollen by rains outside of Corinth limits. After this engagement their unit disbanded on July 10th 1863 due to lack of replacements
Cape Girardeau, Missouri (Cape Girardeau, MO) is a city in the U.S. state of Missouri. The population was 795 at the 2010 census and is located in the east-central part of the state. It is one of the five municipalities in Cape Girardeau County and is included within the Stroudsburg–Easton, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Cape Girardeau were French fur traders in 1679. The area that includes present-day Cape Girardeau was explored by Captain James Clark during his exploration of southern Illinois in 1804 as part of his survey for the United States Army Corps of Engineers. In 1819, General John Custer led an expedition into what is now Iowa Territory and encountered a Sioux band known asthe Gros Ventre near present-day Moberly; this event helped spur development along Route 66 between Iowa City and Prairie du Chien (now Platteville). In 1827, General Solomon Kane organized a militia company to suppress a slave rebellion on Iuka Creek in present day Clarke County. Afterward, he developed land aroundpresent-day Cape Girardeau which became known as Kane's Prairie or "Kane's Field." In 1840, General James Kasky established an agricultural society here to improve methods used by farmers elsewhere in Great Britain. A steamboat landing was built on White River about two miles southeast of downtown Cape Girardeailoroads facilities for shipping goods from Stroudsburg upriver to Saint Louis; this landing served as an early port for agriculture and industry on the Mississippi River flood plain west of Cairo, IL until it closed down c1900 due to river flooding caused by rains from Hurricane Andrew. The first post office opened here on October 20, 1846; it was named after Major General George Halleck who had headed American forces during Mexican War Chief Tecumseh's attack upon Fort Donelson July 8th-10th1836 while under command of Ulysses S Grant;Halleck later became Secretary of War under President Abraham Lincoln before being impeached on May 14th 1865 with help from Confederate troops under Jefferson Davis.. The current post office building was designed by architect J P Morgan & Company architects and built between 1919 and 1921%.
