The United States Air Force deployed a gift to Cape Girardeau, Missouri in 1945. The gift was the USS Enterprise (CVN-65) aircraft carrier. The Enterprise was donated by the ship's captain, J.D. Salinger, and his wife Carolyn Salinger to the city of Cape Girardeau as part of the city's celebrations of World War II victory over Nazi Germany. The Enterprise served as a flagship for both the Ninth Air Force and Fifteenth Air Force during World War II. She carried out Operation Neptune's Spear–the first strategic bombing campaign against Nazi Germany–and participated in other campaigns including Overlord,Normandy, and Crossroads. She decommissioned in 1951 and was sold to Taiwan in 1954 before being scrapped in 1976. In 1945, J.D. Cape Girardeau, Missouri is the county seat of Cape Girardeau County, Missouri. The population was 20,898 at the 2010 census.
