Bridgeton was founded in 1855 by General James Bridgeton and his family. The town prospered until the early 20th century when World War I forced many people to leave for military service. The economy slowly recovered during the 1920s and 1930s, but declined again in the 1940s and 1950s due to factors such as World War II and Prohibition. However, since the late 1990s, Bridgeton has seen an increase in business activity due to its location within easy commuting distance of Springfield, Omaha, Kansas City, St Louis, and other major cities. The town is home to two schools: Hindman Elementary School which serves students from pre-K through 8th grade; and Bridgeton Junior Senior High School which serves students from 9th through 12th grades. Today, Bridgeton is a small-town Americaa place where people still rely on agriculture to support their families. The town has a population of just over 1,000 people and is home to the Bridgeton Municipal Airport which provides passenger service to nearby St Louis and Kansas City. The early history of the Bridgeton community can be traced back to 1836 when General James K. Polk and his wife, Laura Knight Polk, came across the area while exploring the Great Plains. They decided to settle in this region because it had rich soil and ample water resources. The couple built their first cabin in what is now Bridgeton and soon started trading goods with other settlements in the area. In 1846, they added another cabin to their property and named it after their daughter Bessie (Bridget) Knight Polk (1810-1850). This name stuck around for many years until it was changed in 1881 when Adelphia Husted became mayor ofBridgeton. The first businesses opened up inBridynton shortly after its founding as local farmers began trading goods with other towns in the area. By 1850, there were three stores operating withinBridynton limits - one operated by John Murchison and two by James Fenton - both of whom were also pioneers in this frontier town’s growth story. By 1860, therewere four businesses operating withinBridynton boundaries: three owned by Irish immigrants who had come tothe area during the American Civil War; one managed by Quaker traders from Philadelphia;andone run by Ebenezer Porter which served as a grocery store before becoming an express post office later that decade! Most importantly, however, these early businesses fostered social intercourse among residents who formed close ties based on trade experiences or common interests outside of farming! These days remnants of these earlier economic activities can still be seen throughoutthe community today including several old buildings still standing used as shops or restaurants! At about this time too., neighboring communities began moving into what would become Bridynton - most notablyKansas City which annexed the villagein 1868 following its victory over Missouri River at Battle of Leavenworth Field! With so many new arrivals suddenly arrivingIN town!, some newly erected homes were not immediately habitable due to lackof space! As more residents moved intoFrerntown (now Kansas City), however,, spaces became available for them atop abandoned farmhouses that lined rural Roads 10 & 12 near present day Interstate 64! One such house remains extant today vacant next doorto BB&T Bank on Old Route 66 just south of Interstate 64!) Over time though (), many new buildings did start being erected adjacentto existing farms leading eventuallyto incorporation as a VillageIn 1912!!! Bridgeton was founded in 1854 by James Bridwell. It was named for his daughter, Bridget. In 1863, the town passed an act to incorporate as a village. The first mayor of Bridgiton was Wm. Henson. The village had a population of seventy-two people and one store. In 1865, the village passed an act to establish schools and a fire department. A library was also established in that year. After the Union victory at Gettysburg in July of 1865,bridgiton began to decline and its population fell below fifty people by 1871. By 1892, it had only thirteen residents remaining and its school closed that year.
