The name "Bridgeton" is derived from Indian word meaning "pleasant valley." The first post office for Bridgeton was established on January 1, 1855, and it was renamed to its current name on November 12, 1902. The town was platted in 1871 by James Burchfield and others and named after his daughter Brigid (besides the initial "e"). After years of dispute between the towns of Brentwood and Florissant over which had given rise to the original name, both towns eventually agreed to change their names in 1973 as a result of a lawsuit brought by residents of Brentwood who claimed they had been wrongfully disfavored in city elections that year. The town was founded in 1873 by investors from Quincy, Illinois. The first post office in Bridgeton was established in 1874. In 1902, the city of Quincy merged with Bridgeton and the town's name changed to Quincy-Bridgeton. On July 1, 1907, Bridgeton incorporated as a city under the laws of Missouri. In 1922, the state legislature passed a bill that designated 39 square miles (100 km2) of southeastern St. Francois County as part of the new city of Springfield and made it an official City Limits District for Bridgeton until it withdrew its incorporation on November 9th 1980; this measure denied Bridgeton full status as an independent city within Springfield limits despite petitions for annexation from many residents). In 1984-1985 Mayor Jack Madden fought successfully against plans by Springfield to demolish several buildings used by the City government including Bennett Hall which housed the Department of Public Works and firefighting services; these efforts helped save Bennett Hall and other downtown buildings from demolition and contributed toMayor Madden's reputation for being one of Springfield's most Activist Mayors On October 15th 1951 a tornado touched down just west-northwest ofBridgeton destroying or damaging nearly all roofs on homes and businesses within 500 yards (500 m) around the capital city center before dissipating over rolling farmland five miles northeastward into adjoining Randolph County
