Bridgeton, Missouri is a town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,965 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The name "Bridgeton" is an anglicized form of "Bridgetown." The first settlement in the area was made by Daniel Boone and his family in 1778. In 1831, a post office was established at Bridgeton, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1904. In 1836, John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry left many people stranded on the route between Harper's Ferry and Springfield; some of these refugees founded a community called Bridgwater nearpresent-day Bridgeton. At that time, there were no banks or other places where settlers could deposit money to get goods they needed for their journey back home. So many people had to start out from scratch, building their own homes and businesses over time as corn became Available for planting again after the years of drought that followed Brown's Raids. The first school started teaching students in 1837 when William Haines opened a schoolhouse at what is now milepost 3 on U.S 68 north of town limits (now known as US 65). Union Pacific Railroad arrived soon thereafter with its new tracks just east of town limits; this railroad helped spur development along both roads as traders and farmers brought their goods to town for sale before continuing on their way downriver to larger cities like Kansas City or Memphis or upriver to points beyond (euphemistically called "the Great Western Railway"). By 1870 Bridgwater had become so populous that it decided to secede from St Francois County and become its own parish within Confederate Missouri – an arrangement that lasted until 1865 when all farmlands south of Baltimore Street (now Griggs Avenue) were annexed into Jefferson County while most north of Baltimore Street became part of neighboring Carroll County ( synonymous with St Louis through much later times ). Some residents who lived eastward off I-64/I-70 built homes on land acquired during this period including what is now White Flint Township which borders Bridgeton on one side and Defiance Heights Township which borders Florissant Heights Township on the other side . This construction followed directives given by then Governor John Chautenour III following protests against plans by local officials to build a shopping center adjacent to nearby Bloomington (). Bridgeton is a town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,846 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit what is now Bridgeton was Capt. James Cook on his "Endeavor" in 1795. He named it after one of his ships, the "Bridgeton". The first permanent settlement in what is now Bridgeton dates back to 1814 when two families from Illinois founded a farm called "Mint Hill". From this small village grew the town that we know today as Bridgeton. In 1838, General Nathan Bedford Forrest and other Unionists invaded St. Francois County during the American Civil War and burned many homes and businesses in what is now Bridgeton. This event led to much bitterness between the locals and Unionists which would continue for years afterwards. During World War II, many soldiers from Missouri garrisoned at Fort Riley were brought here for their military service; some remain here to this day as Memorial Day residents (FORT RYDER MEMORIAL DAY RESIDENTS). Many factories closed down during World War II but have since reopened including several local companies such as Motorola/Xoom, Allstate Insurance Company and Hormel Foods Incorporated.. In 1948, a large new shopping center was built just east of where Interstate 67 currently runs through town; it has since been replaced by a larger mall located west of I-67 nears Highway 72 which also contains several restaurants and stores
Bridgeton was founded in 1841 by General James Braddock and his wife Judith. The town was named for the Battle of Bridgeton, which took place near present-day Louisville, Kentucky on April 9, 1775. In 1865, the town was renamed for Confederate general Pendergast after he surrendered at Appomattox Court House.
