It was a small business that sold salt water tanks, anchors, and other maritime supplies. In 1865, J.J. Dooley opened a store on the corner of Broadway and Elm Street. It was the first marine gift store in what is now Bridgeton. Dooley offered various items related to boating, fishing, and sailing such as tackle boxes, boats, trophies, and more. In 1926, Julius Sauer opened his own store on Main Street. He specialized in sellingautical equipment including bowsprits and catboats. Sauer continued to operate his store until 1991 when it closed down for good. At its peak during the 1920s-30sSauer's store had a sales volume of over $2 million! Today there are no remaining evidence of Sauer's business success but he is still considered one of the most successful marine gift stores in history!
Bridgeton, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks of central Missouri. The population was 2,915 at the 2010 census. It lies within the Jackson County seat of Hannibal. The community was founded in 1839 by Captain John Bridgeton and his family as a post office on the edge of what is now Hannibal. The first store in town was built by Capt. Bridgeton's father, James A. Bridgeton, and operated for about a year before being destroyed by fire. Captain John's son-in-law, Amos Kendall, opened a store next door to Kendall & Sons until 1845 when he sold his interest to Adam Kline who ran it for about 20 years until it burned down in 1868. In 1879 Jno. Wigglesworth bought the business from Kline and continued to run it until it closed in 1903. In 1908 Captained John's grandson, Arthur Hinton established a grocery store which continues to be open today as Hinton Grocery Company Incorporated (HGC). In 1915 an electric streetcar service began operating through Hannibal with stops at all the local stores including HGCs; this service ended in 1951 but was reborn as an antique bus tour served by BRT out of downtown Hannibal during certain weeks each year between May and September

Bridgeton is a town in west-central Missouri, United States. The population was 1,502 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1837 by Scots immigrants and named for Brigid, the wife of one of their number. In 1840, Bridgeton had a post office and two churches. In 1881, it had a school and a grocery store. In 1951, it became an incorporated town. The first post office closed in 1881 because of low mail volume and the last opened in 1936 due to growth in the town as well as improved transportation options. Bridgeton contains some early nineteenth century architecture such as the old courthouse which is now used as a library research center; and also more recent buildings like the high school which replaced an earlier building that burned down in 1961 and again in 1998. One of the most interesting aspects of Bridgeton's history is its connection with both slavery and freedom movements; many residents were able to claim free or partial emancipation during various periods throughout its history (including after World War II). Today, much of what makes up Bridgeton's historical past can be found on display at various local museums or libraries across the community including: The Old County Courthouse Museum (which showcases exhibits from before 1850 when Bridgeton was part of Washington County), The First Presbyterian Church Museum (which features artifacts from Reconstruction through 1922), John A. Rankin House (the only surviving home built byRankin Family who came to live here after leaving Independence, Missouri), The African American Heritage Center (which houses artifacts from pre-civil rights days), and finally The Jeremiah Johnson Home & Gardens which features restored period farmsteads dating back to 1860
