Bridgeton, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks of central Missouri. The population was 5,868 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Springfield-Springfield county seat. The first coffee beans were grown on this site in 1870 by an Englishman named John Stevens. The first cafe in Bridgeton opened in 1875 and served coffee, milk, and pastries. In 1916, Mr. & Mrs. Harry Crane started serving their famous chocolate cake from a truck parked on the square near their store. In 1954, they moved their business to what is now known as the Bridgeton Coffee Shop on Main Street (now Old Main Street). They continued to serve until 1991 when they closed down due to health concerns. Today's businesses are all located near each other on busy streets such asMain and State Streets - making it easy for customers to get their favorite coffee fix without having to move too far away!

By 1890, the population had increased to 2,000 people and by 1920 it had grown to 4,000 people; however, by 1930 it had decreased to 2,500 people due to the Great Depression. In 1955-1957 Bridgeton experienced an economic drought that caused many businesses closing their doors including: banks (Cady's Bank closed 1935), grain elevators (Alcoholic Beverage Corporation closed 1933), groceries (Jenny's Grocery & Store caved into bankruptcy 1929), two newspapers (The Herald-Leader & St Louis Post Dispatch merged 1951) and one car dealership (Plymouth Motors). However during this time period there were also some notable accomplishments such as: starting Bridgeton High School which graduated its first class of 35 students on September 15th 1957; development of land north of town for housing known as "Cedar Trails"; establishment of Bridgeton Municipal Airport which served local aviation for over 50 years until it closed operations in 1990; initiation by Mayor Harry Duhring of the original concept for a municipal park now known as "Duhring Park"; erection of a new courthouse/legal center building that served as both court house and law library from 1959 until 1966 when it became the Town Hall Building; establishment within town limits of one fulltime business district which later became known as "Economic Development District" - responsible for creating job opportunities within town boundaries; construction within town limits - beginning with construction of new water main line -of four parks including Cedar Trails Park near downtown; installation within city limits - beginning with installation Of electric lighting throughout downtown -of an extensive network of streetscape improvements
