Bridgeton is a small town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Bridgeton is located on the east side of the Missouri River and is bordered by Boone County to the north and west, Clinton County to the south and east, and Dunklin County to the southeast. The first settlers in what is now Bridgiton were farmers who arrived around 1810. The area that would become Bridgiton was first bought from Captain James Ketchum by John J Waddell in 1815. In 1820, Daniel Boone took possession of 640 acres (248 hectares) of land east of what is now Bridgiton on which he built his cabin known as "the Hermitage". When Indian war broke out in 1814-1816, many men from this area volunteered for service in various units organized under General Harrison's command. Some members of Mr. Boone's family also served in these wars including his son Daniel Boone Sr., who became one of Kentucky's first Senators after being elected as a Democrat from Virginia during the Reconstruction era (1877-1913). In 1865, Major General John Fetterman ordered Brigadier General George Armstrong Custer to lead an attack against Cheyenne Indians near present-day Northaven while he was commanding white troops led by Colonel Nathaniel Banks across South Dakota Territory into Kansas Territory. This action resulted in several civilian casualties among Custer's troops and began what has been called "The Great Sioux War" which lasted three months and ended with engagements at Rosebud Creek where over 25 Lakota warriors were killed including Chief Black Hawk;Custer had predicted that this battle would result in their surrender if it went head on however it resulted instead in his death when his horse got caught between two cliffs. A plaque at Fort Harker commemorates this event which still stands today just outside Fort Harker National Monument accessed via US Highway 59/ 40 miles (64 km) west of Bridgeton off State Road 2604A (northwest corner of section 6N6R). In 1876, the name was changed to "Bridgeton" after American actress Bridget Fonda. The town began as a small farming community with just a few hundred residents. A railroad line passed through the town in 1881, which made it easier for people to get around and trade goods with other parts of Missouri and Canada. This led to increased business and development in Bridgeton over time. In 1949, Bridgeton became an incorporated city and has since grown into one of the most popular communities in Kansas City metropolitan area. The city has several shopping centers, 3 professional sports teams (a major league baseball team called Royals until 1993 when they moved toKansas City), 2 large universities (University of Missouri-Kansas City and University of Southern Illinois), 2 golf courses (one operated by PGA TOUR member Titleist Golf Corporation) as well as many smaller businesses including restaurants, gas stations, health clinics, etc.
Bridgeton was founded in 1836 by James Bridgiton and his family. The town became a stopping point on the Illinois and Missouri Railroad, which allowed it to grow rapidly.
