The history of the Bolivar, Missouri National Guard can be traced back to 1907. The unit was organized as a militia organization under the jurisdiction of the territorial government of Ogle County. It grew rapidly in popularity and within a few years had become one of the most popular volunteer organizations in the area. In 1912, national guard units were authorized by Congress as part of the National Defense Act. On July 1, 1914, Bolivar became nationally known when its men responded to an attempted assassination against President Woodrow Wilson. The guardsmen played a pivotal role in defending Washington D.C., and their heroism has been celebrated ever since. In 1933, Congress passed the National Guardsman's Emergency Relief Act which provided for increased funding for national guard units throughout America. Throughout World War II, Bolivar served with distinction including participation in both European and Pacific theaters of war. In 1946, upon repeal of wartime restrictions on military service by women, Bolivar became fully female-owned and operated with new name—National Guard Women's Battalion (NGWB). From then until its disbandment in 1991, NGWB remained an active member and reserve component of the Missouri National Guard system. Today, Bolivar remains a vibrant community Proudly Serving Our Nation's Capital Region! With over 350 full-time registered members who offer their time and expertise to help make our city better every day; we are confident that we will continue to serve our community through local events/programs/service opportunities until all residents are proud citizens: uniformed or not!

The Bolivar National Guard was originally organized on May 14, 1861, as the Missouri State Militia. The unit was redesignated the Bolivar National Guards on November 3, 1865. On July 1, 1907, the Bolivar National Guard became a federally chartered organization under the United States Army. The regiment was activated in World War I and served with distinction throughout Europe. In World War II the regiment served in various theaters of operations including Normandy and Italy. After World War II the regiment redeployed to Fort Polk, Louisiana where they remained until their current station at Bolivar National Guard Armory in Missouri.
Bolivar is a town in Gallatin County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white person to arrive in Bolivar was Daniel Boone in 1803. He named the site after Simón Bolívar, who had fought for independence from Spain. The present-day town was founded about 1837 by Captain John Pritchard and his family. When Pritchard's father died in 1837, he did not leave any children to take up the captaincy; so Bolivar became an all-male community until it became coeducational in 1945. The town has played an important role in local politics for many years. In addition to being the home of both the county courthouse and jail, Bolivar also served as the location of several other government buildings including a school house and a post office. Over time, many businesses have moved into Bolivar from nearby cities such as Springfield and make it one of the most vibrant towns within easy commuting distance of that city. The Militia Act of 1814 authorized the creation of a national guard to help manage these activities. The first national guard regiment was organized on December 15, 1861. The act provided for 1,500 soldiers to be raised with five years service, mustered into service on July 21, 1862, and discharged on October 7, 1865. These soldiers were not considered veterans and could not vote or own land until they turned twenty-one years old. The National Guard has been used extensively in America over the centuries as a reserve force for the government and as an adjunct to the military. The population of Bolivar increased from about 100 in 1840 to over 5,000 by 1860. The railroad arrived in 1868 and bolivarian schools were opened soon afterward. A cotton gin and stockyards were constructed in the early 20th century. By the end of the century, Bolivar had become one of the most populous towns in Missouri.
