The cannon was donated by Major General David Dixon and his regiment, the 4th Missouri Volunteer Infantry Regiment. It is believed that this particular cannon was brought into Bolivar on February 14, 1864 by Colonel James Wigglesworth and used against Confederate forces at the Battle of Valparaiso. It is also believed that this particular Cannon was manned by members of the 4th Missouri Volunteers during this battle. Following the Civil War, Bolivar began to grow as a small town and it became apparent that there were not enough cannons available to protect it from potential attacks from either side. In order to ensure that Bolivar would be able to defend itself against any future attack, a local militia was formed. This militia consisted of men from both sides of the conflict and served under both General Nathaniel Banks and Lieutenant Governor John Brown. It is interesting to note that many of these individuals had been born in nearby St Louis County. It is also interesting to note that throughout its history, Bolivar has never shied away from using violence in order to protect its citizens or property. For example, in 1890, an attempt was made on behalf of Mayor Abram Pritchetttoto's life by two gunmen who shot at him while he walked out his door after dinner. Likewise, in 1898 an attempted robbery occurred inside one of Bolivar's businesses which resulted in three people being injured including one who later died from their injuries. Additionally, during World War II (1941-1945),bolivars residents aided in providing food for troops stationed within their community as well as providing housing for those soldiers who resided within town limits (i.e., soldiers living near Main Street). This assistance included filling up truckloads of food with donations brought into town via vehicle or boat each day). Bolivar, Missouri is a town in Clay County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Saint Louis metropolitan area. Bolivar was founded in 1839 by Carlos Bolívar and his family. After following the Kansas–Nebraska Act into law and becoming an independent republic within the United States, Bolívar became president of Bolivia in 1846 and led a successful revolution against Spanish rule that ousted Spanish dictator Francisco de Miranda y de la Torre from power. He became one of three presidents of Venezuela (the others being Simon Bolívar and Antonio José de Sucre) before dying in office in 1830. Bolivar was a town in Hancock County, Missouri, United States, until it was merged into the city of Springfield in 1907. It is named for Simón Bolívar, who served as president of Venezuela from 1824 to 1830 and as a general in the Venezuelan army during the War of Independence. The original community, which straddled what is now east-central Springfield and west-central Bolivar Counties, was founded by Norwegian immigrants in 1871. The first post office at Bolivar was established in 1875. In 1907, when Springfield became an independent city, Bolivar was merged with it.
