Bolivar was a small town in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. The community was founded by José de la Peña y Bolívar on November 3, 1809 as the town of Vacaville. It grew rapidly due to its location at the intersection of two wagon roads and its natural resources. In 1827, it became the capital of Missouri Territory. The area that now includes Bolivar was part of an old hunting ground for the Shawnees and other Native Americans. A fortuitous location led to its incorporation into the new territory and rapid growth. The first school in Bolivar was built in 1811. A courthouse and jail were erected soon thereafter. By 1830, Bolivar had a population of about 150 people; it began to grow rapidly during the late 19th century based on trade with St Louis and Kansas City. In 1837, Bolivar became one of six towns in Jackson County when it was organized from parts of Whitley andDecatur Counties. The following year saw significant growth when a canal was constructed through bolivarian land that connected Lake Michigan tothe Mississippi River via Cuttler's Ferry Landing on the lowerMississippi River. This helped bring increased trade and commerce to bolivariantowns along with jobs for local farmers who processed goods arriving via canalboats or steamboats
The first settler in Bolivar, Missouri was J.F. Dickey in 1839. The town was platted in 1854 by John Cramer and James Fenton. It became a town on December 7, 1864 when it was made part of the larger Sioux City, Iowa city. The population of Bolivar peaked at 235 people in 1880 and then fell to just 16 people by 1910. However, the decline did not stop the town from growing; it reached its current size of 60 people by 1920. From 1840-1920, Bolivar had 3 churches:Methodist Episcopal (1840), Methodist Episcopal (1860), and Baptist (1880).
