Bolivar is a small town in Johnson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,878 at the 2010 census. Bolivar is located on Missouri Route K south of Interstate 70. Bolivar began as an early settlement by Irish Americans in the late 1800s. They named their town after General Simón Bolívar, who fought in the Spanish–American War and later served as president of Venezuela from 1829 to 1830. The Irish immigrants were the first permanent American settlers in what would become Johnson County, and they erected a log cabin near present-day Bolivar on November 12, 1887. The community quickly grew with their arrival and soon had a post office, schoolhouse, grocery store, and two other businesses. By 1890 Bolivar had also developed a church and cemetery. The town's growth continued through the years but it was during World War II that Bolivar truly blossomed into its current form as an agricultural center due to its strategic location between I-70 and Stroudsburg Boulevard (now US 45). During World War II local farmers produced food for both military personnel and civilians within easy reach of Stroudsburg Boulevard; this led to increased intensity economic development in the area post-war. Today Bolivar remains one of the most important agricultural communities in Johnson County thanks to its severe lack of access to other markets outside its borders; this has helped maintain its rural character while also providing ample opportunity for economic growth."

Bolivar, Missouri is located in the Ozarks of central Missouri. The town was founded by the brother-in-law of Simon Bolivar, who became Venezuela's first president. The town is named after Simón Bolívar, who led Gran Colombia in a successful resistance to Spanish rule and later helped lead Venezuela to independence from Spain. In 1821, Bolivar organized an expedition to explore the area that now includes present day Missouri. After finding suitable land for development and repelling Native American attacks, Bolivar's settlement grew rapidly and soon boasted a population of around 2,500 people. By 1836, however, Bolivar had realized that growing up near a major river would be difficult and so he moved his community upriver to what is now Springfield. There he founded the town of Springfield on land that he donated to the state of Missouri. The town quickly become one of the most important cultural centers in central Missouri due to its location close to major rivers and its easy access to resources such as waterpower and timber. In addition, Springfield served as a center for education during both rural and urban periods; it was eventually renamed Jefferson City after President James K. Polk (1846-1912). Despite these successes, Bolívar experienced some difficulty during his lifetime due to increasing political instability in Venezuela and Mexican influence over Venezuelan politics. He died at age 83 years in 1855 without any children or grandchildren living abroad which left him with an ownership stake in only about 1% of Venezuelan assets total at the time of his death
