Belton, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks region of western Missouri. The population was 1,674 at the 2000 census. The first coffeehouses were opened in Belton in 1849 by two British businessmen, John Scott and James Murdoch. The first coffeehouse, called the Mr. Coffee House (later renamed the Citizens Theatre), operated from 1851 to 1861. It was located on Main Street near present-day Boulevard Avenue. It was open to all who could afford to drink coffee and sold newspapers for sale as well as refreshments such as milk and eggs. In 1865, two years after its opening, the Citizens Theatre burned down due to an arson fire set by a group of local boys while it was being used as a theater. The Belton Coffee Company purchased the building and continued business until 1898 when it closed its doors permanently due to financial problems. Belton's only remaining coffeehouse is currently housed within the old post office on Court Road opposite Highway 6059 which opened in 1907 and is still functioning today as a Post Office café/drop off location for customers purchasing items from various businesses within town including grocery stores, restaurants, convenience stores and pharmacies.
