Belton is an unincorporated community in northeast Missouri, United States. It is located on the Belton River. The population was 1,878 at the 2010 census. The belted iron ore mine was opened near Bellefontaine in 1865 and accounted for most of the town's economic development until it closed in 1984. Today, only a few Unitarian Universalist churches remain standing in what once were several businesses and residences around the riverfront area near Highway 12A. A small mill that processed flour from the ore still stands just outside of town along Route 22 about east of I-70 exit 144B (exit 114A for Bellefontaine).

The town became a city on July 1, 2009, when it merged with Saint Joseph City. Belton is located at (35.566667, -96.938398). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 2,028 people residing in the town. The population density was 136 people per square mile (53/km²). There were 1,818 housing units at an average density of 84 per square mile (31/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98% White and 2% Native American. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0% of the population
Belton was founded in 1836 by John Belton and his brother, Isaac. The town grew rapidly due to the success of its mineral Farming system, which included access to a wide variety of minerals that were used for Industrial purposes. In 1876, the townsite passed into the hands of the Belton Mining Company and it continued to prosper until 1907 when a fire destroyed most of the town. With only an estimated population of 100 residents as of 1910, Belton never regained its former glory.
