The Belton Army National Guard has been in existence since 1917. The unit was originally made up of soldiers from the town of Belton, Missouri. It was reactivated on November 3rd, 1947 and organized under the United States Army. At that time, it consisted of just over 350 men. The first commander of the Belton Army National Guard was Colonel John H. Geary. Over time, there have been several commanders who have served in this position including Colonel George Aiken and Colonel Don Witherspoon. Since its inception, theBelton Army National Guard has participated in many military operations both during World War II and currently fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan as part of Operation Neptune’s Spear which is still ongoing today. In total, the unit has fought in a number of wars which has resulted in them earning numerous awards including four Bronze Stars for valor and two Purple Hearts for wounds received during combat incidents. Additionally, they have also been awarded numerous commendations from various government agencies such as being selected as one of “the top units” by Department of Defense for their performance during multiple deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan which were both recognized with various commendations from other branches of the US Military too such as being selected to participate in prestigious Fort Benning Infantry drill competition where they placed second overall only behind Air Force Special Operations Forces

Belton is a small town in Muskingum County, Missouri, United States. The population was 2,512 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-IL-Muskingum Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by John Belton in 1836. He and his family built a log cabin on the edge of a small stream near what is now Belton Lake. By 1840, he had organized a township and named it Belton Township. In 1848, he donated land to form what is now Muskingum County and named it after himself, as well as his contributions to the county. Belton first saw action during the Mexican–American War when General James Boggs’ brigade arrived there on October 8, 1846 to help lead an effort against Santa Anna's army under Capitan Francisco Villa. That same year, Colonel George Stephenson resigned from command of Department X (the Western Theater) because of health problems and Lieutenant Colonel Augustus Herndon took over command of that unit until Stephenson returned. In 1847–48, Captain Abel Brooks led an expedition against the Osage Indians near present day Carbondale in order to drive them out of their territory which they claimed for themselves since Kansas had not yet been admitted into the United States as a state. In 1850–51, Belton voted in favor of admission into the Union as a Ulysses S Grant City; however this vote did not come through because Missouri refused to ratify it until after Lincoln was elected president on November 4th that year. On November 5th 1830 days after its incorporation as a city by ordinance with 3 votes against 10 for (1 each from Mayor John Sheppard and Aldermen Oliver Holmes), Belton became one of those 33 counties within Illinois Territory annexed by Mississippi Territory on April 17th 1830 along with Adams County (now Memphis), Cass County (now St Louis), Fayette County (now Louisville), Howard County (now Wichita Falls) and Pulaski Parish (now Baton Rouge). Belton remains one of only three municipalities in Illinois still functioning without having lost any residents since 1830 due to annexation or dissolution – Galesburg being nearest geographically while Chicago has completely lost population since then while Springfield has experienced significant growth but no annexations/divisions - making it one of only two American cities still existing where every resident older than 50 years old can remember their city’s original name(s).
