Bellefontaine Neighbors is a small town in northwestern Marshall County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. Bellefontaine was founded in 1837 by Colonel John Bellefontaine and his family of surveyors. The name derives from "Bellefeuille" (a stream that flows through the community), which means "beautiful field." A post office was established in Bellefontaine in 1853, and remained open until 1983. According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,291 people, 527 households, and 347 families residing in the village. The population density was 924.4 people per square mile (354.8/km²). There were 602 housing units at an average density of 398.8 per square mile (149.2/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 96% White; 2% African American; 0% Native American; 0% Asian; 1% from other races; and 1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3%. There were 527 households out of which 31% had children underthe ageof 18 living with them, 50% were married couples living together, 10% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30% were non-families. 24

Bellefontaine Neighbors is a small town located in the eastern suburbs of St. Louis, Missouri. The population was 2,592 at the 2010 census. It is named after Bellefontaine, Ohio and Bellefontaine Township, Michigan. Bellefontaine neighbors were laid out in 1836 by James Kapp and his son John Kapp Jr., who were settlers in present-day Clayton County. They named their community for BelleFontaine, Ohio—an adjacent village that had been abandoned following the Battle of Fallen Timbers in 1813. Bellefontaine first appeared on maps as a place name in 1855. At that time it consisted of just a few houses and was known as "the farmstead." By 1860 it had grown to include eight families and had its own schoolhouse and church. In 1865 the Kapps donated land to form what would become Bellefontaine Township. The township Spells its name from two different places: "Belle Fontain" (a French word meaning "beautiful fontain") because of the beauty of some of the surrounding countryside, and "Fontain" because one local family owned many acres within its boundaries. The township experienced several waves of growth over the years: during World War II it became home to more than 60 military personnel stationed at Fort Snelling; during the 1960s it saw an influx of refugees from Watts; and most recently, via annexation by St Peters City in 2003, Bellefontane Neighbors has seen continued growth with new subdivisions popping up all around its perimeter since then!
