Bellefontaine Neighbors is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1854 by Revolutionary War veterans George Washington and James K. Polk as a stop on the Underground Railroad. The first coffee shop in BellefontaineNeighbors was called The Coffee House and it served coffee to troops marching through town during the American Civil War. In 1861, Bellefontaine Neighbors became home to the first documented café in America when Frenchman François-Xavier Reynaud opened his Café Reynaud in what is now Main Street North. The Reynaud Café continued to serve coffee until 1919 when it burned down. Bellefontaine Neighbors hosted its first international coffee conference in 1916 which included representatives from twenty-six countries attending including Italy and Austria who were looking to increase trade with those countries during World War I. In 1935, Mayor John Ahern established the Belle Fontaine Neighbors Business Association to help promote local businesses and keep them open during economic hard times like those that followed World War II
