Yazoo City is a city in Claiborne County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 25,641 as of the 2010 census. It is the county seat and largest city of Claiborne County. Yazoo City is on the banks of the Yazoo River. The name "Yazoo" comes from an Egyptian word meaning "the great river." In 1819, General Andrew Jackson advanced upriver to Fort Yacob and met General Jean Baptiste LaSalle at this site; they agreed to co-operate against British forces that were attacking Mobile approximately downstream. The first white settlements in what is now Claiborne County were established by Scots-Irish immigrants who arrived between 1796 and 1800 at the mouth of the Yazoo River. In 1825, John Mason built a dam across the Yazoo River just upstream from where it emptied into Gulf Stream Bayou (now known as Lake Erie) while working for fur traders in what is now Mississippi Territory; he named his settlement White Sulphur Springs after his mine thereabouts. In 1830, Isaac Brock founded a community called Indianola on nearby Marsh Island which later became Yazoo City proper; he named it in honour of James Fenton Post (1789-1864), one of his business partners from New York City.

It served as an important center of trade and culture for many years, and is considered one of the most significant slave-holding communities in America. In 1865, Yazoo City became part of the Union army during the American Civil War, and soon afterwards began to decline as a result of its strategic location on the Mississippi River. However, it continued to be an important cultural and economic center until around 1990. The city’s history can be traced back to early 1819 when several Choctaw chiefs decided to move their village fromatchee country near Mobile to what is now Yazoo City because of concerns about Indian raids into their territory. The new town was founded on August 5, 1819, by Captain John Smith with twelve men under his command. At first, Yazoo City functioned primarily as a trading post between other slave-holding communities along the river and Soundville on its southern bank; however, it quickly developed into a more significant political region due to its strategic location onriverine passage points for goods being brought upriver from Missouri and Kentucky across the Mississippi River Valley. In 1865, when Confederate forces attacked Union units stationed at Cairo Junction onthe Tennessee River north of Memphis, Yazoo City played an important role in supporting Confederate forces; indeed, General Braxton Bragg himself ordered his artillery siege against Union positions here beginning on October 20th ([1865]). The city also experienced heavy fighting throughout November and December 1865; however, by January 6th,[1866], much of eastern central Mississippian had been liberated from rebel control following successful campaigns led by General Edwin Stanton[1]. Aftermath included thousands dead or wounded among both sides,[2],[3] but also saw major attractions such as large plantations within reach for Confederate troops (such as Chattanooga) while small towns like Yazoo City slowly lost their importance overall within Mississippian society. In 1795, the United States acquired what is now Yazoo City from Britain as part of the Treaty of Paris. The town began to grow rapidly in the 1800s, thanks to cotton plantations and timber production. By 1819, Yazoo City had a population of over 3,000 people. In 1827, Yazoo City became an important stop on the Underground Railroad. Many slaves were helped escape to freedom in this city before they were captured by English troops and brought back to slavery. The slave trade ended in 1865 due to new laws passed by Congress.
