Yazoo City, Mississippi is a city in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,838 at the 2010 census. Yazoo City is the county seat of Hinds County. Yazoo City was founded on October 16, 1871 by John Fenton and others as a Mormon colony named "Hindsville". The original town plat included two blocks of land for each family to farm. By 1876, Yazoo City had a population of 350. In 1886, the town became an independent municipality with its own government and judiciary system. On November 15, 1886, the first municipal election in Hinds County was held and John Fenton received an overwhelming majority of votes to become the first mayor of Yazoo City. In 1907, work began on building what would become known as Cook University which would eventually become one of Mississippi's most prestigious universities and be home to some of the state's most successful politicians and businessmen. In 1915-1916 Yazoo City hosted oneofthe largest fairs in American history called "The Cotton Fair" which featured exhibits from all over America as well as European countries such as England and Germany. The success of this event led to increased business opportunities for Yazoo City and helped it grow rapidly into one of America's leading cotton towns during the 1920s and 1930s. During World War II there were many military installations located in or around Yazoo City including Camp Blanding (later Fort Polk), Fort Myer (later Arlington National Cemetery) and Fort Worth Army Air Field (now Joint Base Andrews). Many local businesses did not have time to relocate due to war productionrequirements however many remain today such as Post Office Service Headquarters Building (built in 1951), Coca Cola Refreshment Center (opened in 1957), Ford dealership(opened in 1962), YMCA Training Center (opened in 1984) and many more examples throughout downtown alone! After World War II ended hostilities ceased between Americaand Japan but economic conditions remained difficult so on December 7th 1945 Japanese forces attacked Pearl Harbor resulting in millions lost their lives including General Manager Fenton who along with thousands other Mississippians were immediately bled white by US forces during Operation Swastika which followed days later! As part of post-war reconstruction efforts Hudspeth Act No 382 made changes to local government powers including reducing voting power for African Americans while maintaining whites only property qualifications for city councils although certain rights were given back such as black service members being able to serve without discrimination upon discharge! This period also saw major change within Yazoo city with Mayor Gibson being elected unopposed after successfully running against incumbent James Akins; this signaled a new era where party affiliation didn't play a major role when it came time for officeholders to be chosen! In 1970 Mayor Gibson ran unsuccessfully against then State Representative Bartow but he did managetdate that year's mayoral election which he won easily defeating challenger Vinson Youngblood by just over 50% Of The Vote!. AfterMayor Gibson left office following his death term effective January 1st 1971 he was succeeded by his son Vernon Easley who served until 1981 when he too retired due to health problems

Yazoo City was founded in 1819 by a group of Mississippians led by Captain James K. Polk. The city became an important fur trading center during the early 1800s and was known for its white oak trees, cotton plantations, and slave markets. In the 1840s, Yazoo City experienced a period of political violence which contributed to its decline as a town. However, during the late 1800s and early 1900s, Yazoo City regained some of its former prominence as an agricultural center and business destination. After World War I, Yazoo City experienced a period of rapid growth thanks to the automobile industry and other economic changes. During the 1930s, however, new problems emerged in Yazoo City – including widespread poverty, crime, and environmental degradation – which caused it to experience significant declines in population and economic activity. After several years of struggle, Yazoo City recovered somewhat during the 1940s and 1950s but again suffered from various social issues such as crime and educational failure that have continue to affect it today.

The city rose to prominence during the early 19th century as a manufacturing center for cotton goods. However, it declined after the American Civil War, due in part to its distance from large markets and its lack of infrastructure. In the 1920s, Yazoo City experienced an influx of African Americans who had fled southern America following racial segregation. The city's African American population increased rapidly, and by 1930 it had one of the largest black populations in Mississippi. After World War II, Yazoo City became a major center for Black working class residents seeking education and opportunity. It also served as a staging ground for civil rights marches and protests. By 1970, however, Yazoo City was experiencing increasing economic decline due to shifting industry and demographics. In that year, it lost its status as a major cultural hub within Mississippi due to competition from larger metropolitan areas such as Memphis or Jackson
