Zoo City, Mississippi is an unincorporated community located in Choctaw County, Mississippi. The population was 2,584 at the 2000 census. It is home to the Zoos of America and Jackson Zoo. The first European settlers in what is now Choctaw County were French traders who established a trading post in 1795. They named the settlement after Jean-Baptiste Yazoo, a general in the French army who fought against British forces during the American Revolution. The post was abandoned by 1810 due to lack of supplies and competition from Spanish settlements in Louisiana Territory. In 1824, surveyors discovered oil reserves near present-day Zoar City when they drilled for petroleum on land owned by John Chilton (1775-1855). The discovery caused great interest in nearby Choctaw County and led to incorporation of Zoar City as an incorporated town on December 12, 1829. By 1830, over 1,000 people lived there with a merchant business that supplied goods for surrounding villages. During Reconstruction following the American Civil War (1861-1865), much of Choctaw County became part of new states within the Union such as Alabama and Mississippi while also losing its AfricanAmerican majority. This economic tension helped contribute to social unrest which culminated with violence and arson against white homes in 1865 known as "The Burning of Baghdad". As a result of this unrest,Choctaw City was placed under military occupation until it returned to civilian rule on October 3, 1865. Yazoo City is a city in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 9,824 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hinds County. The first inhabitants of Yazoo City were the Creek Indians who built their village on the confluence of the Missisipi and Yazoo Rivers in 1809. The town was founded by Major John McClernand in 1827 as a trading post on the banks of the Yazoo River. McClernand named his new community for General James Fenton Overton, who had led American forces against Mexico in 1821 and 1825. Fort Overton was abandoned in 1830 and Yazoo City became one of Hinds County's most prominent towns. In 1862, Confederate general Robert Ewell established Camp Forrest near Yazoo City to house Confederate troops awaiting shipment to Mobile Bayou across from Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant. TheCCU station at Yazoo City served as headquarters for many months until September 1863 when Union General Ambrose Burnside moved his army northeastward along Mobile Bayou and constructed Camp Ford downstream from Yazoo City with its own CCU station at Ford Landing which served as an interchange between Confederate lines and Union ones. After Battle Hood's surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865, Reconstruction ended in Mississippi and all but two of Hinds County's thirty-six municipalities were abolished within six months; except for Yazoo City which continued to exist as an unincorporated community until it was merged into Jackson Township on January 1, 1926. Yazoosville remained an important cotton gin until about 1905 when it became a market town primarily because of its location adjacent to Mobile Bayou just upstream from Jacksonborough Dam where cotton bales could be unloaded onto barges before being conveyed downriver to Quincy, Alabama or New Orleans or other destinations Yazoosville experienced rapid growth following World War II due largely to military personnel stationed there during that time period who generated large numbers of jobs both inside and outside the military while also providing housing opportunities for soldiers' families which began developing after 1945 As part of efforts by President Dwight D Eisenhower to promote white flight from Birmingham during the early 1960s dozens if not hundreds of African Americans relocated permanently or temporarily to various locations throughout southwest Alabama including Muscle Shoals (later Huntsville), Decatur ( subsequently Montgomery ), Jasper ( later Selma ), Tuskegee University , Brookhaven National Laboratory , Cahaba Heights ( later Perrysburg ), Madison Avenue Baptist Church . Many blacks also came south temporarily during this time period including Willie Horton who arrived November 12th,,1963 after leading a march through downtown Birmingham seeking civil rights access to education then moving northward via MLK Highway into Greenwood Village near Memphis before returning briefly back east again
