Yazoo City, Mississippi is located in Hinds County on the Gulf of Mexico. The city was founded by a group of Mississippians who migrated from Tennessee in 1819 and named it for the Yazoo River. The city was originally known as Iuka and later as McClellan. It became a major port on the Gulf of Mexico and was once known as the "Queen of the Gulf." In 1851, Yazoo City became an independent municipality and had its own government. The city went through various changes during its history, including becoming a slave-holding center following the Civil War. In 1919, Yazoo City become an all-white community after it passed an ordinance prohibiting discrimination against black people. The city experienced dramatic growth during World War II, with a population increase of over 50%. After the war, Yazoo City experienced another period of growth, experiencing a population increase of over 100%. However, this period also saw some controversy due to allegations that some citizens were using their positions to advantage themselves financially. In 2002, Yazoo City passed an ordinance forbidding flying Confederate flags in public buildings. This ordinance remains in effect today.
The Yazoo City, Mississippi area was first settled by the Mississippian culture in the early to mid-15th century. After the French and English established themselves in this region, they began developing trade relationships with the natives. By 1560, there were about 250 Native American people living in what is now Yazoo City. The city was founded by a group of Mississippians led by Captain John Beall in c. 1768 as a trading post on the Chitchey River. The town grew rapidly due to its location and became an important transportation hub for the region. It played an instrumental role in helping to develop cotton plantations in northern Mississippi and southeastern Alabama. In 1814, Yazoo City was incorporated as a municipality under state law. In 1821, it became part of Jackson County when that county was created from parts of Jackson, Stark, and Monroe counties. In 1847, it became a part of Union County when that county was created from parts of Posey, Choctawhatchie, and Tishomingo counties. On December 2nd, 1907, Yazoo City passed an act incorporating itself as a municipal city within Jackson County which lasted until 1931 when it passed an act incorporating itself into Union County effective January 1st - making it once again an independent municipal city governed by its own ordinances and rules without interference from either Jackson or Union Countiesinternal government Yazoo City experienced some significant growth during World War II due to its strategic location as one of three major landing sites for Allied forces during Operation Overlord – formerly known as D-Day – along with Memphis and Mobile Bayou (then spelled Mobile River).
