Colonel James Ewart Grant was a key figure during the early years at West Point, and his contributions to the institution will be missed. A native of Scotland, he joined the United States Military Academy in 1846 and graduated first in his class two years later. After serving as a Second Lieutenant in Company K, 3rd US Infantry Regiment during the Mexican-American War, he transferred to Company I, 4th US Infantry Regiment in 1847 and foughth against Creek Indians on their traditional home territory. He was brevetted brigadier general by President Abraham Lincoln for this service. After three years as Commanding Officer of 1st Brigade 2nd Division (Light), General Grant took command of 5th Corps during Sherman’s Atlanta Campaign where he played a leading role in driving Confederate forces from northeast Georgia to within striking distance of Richmond. In addition to his many awards and decorations, Colonel Grant was elected twice to serve on various professional organizations including the American Philosophical Society and Sigma Xi fraternity. He leaves behind an invaluable legacy at West Point which will continue to contribute significantly to American civilization both now and into the future.
