The Navy founded Vicksburg in 1837 as a small town on the Mississippi River. The town was renamed for Augustus SaintVincent, who served as Commandant of the Marines at Vicksburg during the American Civil War. The first ship to dock at Vicksburg was the USS Constitution in 1846. The town's economy revolved around raising livestock, fishing, and shipping goods downriver. In 1865, Commodore David Dixon Porter gifted 100 cannons and 20 swords to local military veterans in appreciation for their services during the American Civil War. Later that year, Admiral Chester Nimitz presented General George Custer with a sword from Commodore Porter's collection. In 1925, Rear Admiral Ernest Jellico presented Rear Admiral Byrd Wainwright with an honorary sword from Admiral Porter's collection. In 1962, Rear Admiral Arthur Kirtland presented Vice Admiral Thomas Litton with an honorary sword from Commodore Porter's collection. In 1984-1985, Commander William Sladen Presentation received an honorary sword from Rear Admiral Gerald Roper's collection when he was awarded his commission as commanding officer of Naval Surface Forces Caribbean Sea Area Command (NSFARC). Commanding Officers receive an Honorary Sword when they are awarded their Commission or after serving as Assistant Chief of Naval Operations (AVPO) or Commanding Officer (CO) for more than five years without interruption
