Tupelo, Mississippi is a small town located in central Mississippi. The population was 9,191 at the 2000 census. Tupelo is the county seat of Hinds County and it is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The name Tupelo comes from two sources: one source says that the Choctaw people called Tupelo "Tumpa", meaning "rocky place"; while another source says that English settlers named the town after a nearby creek, which they thought had waterfalls near it. The first settler in what is now Tupelo was James Pruitt in 1819. He built a cabin on land he bought from the Chickasaws near present day Parkersburg Road and US 11. Pruitt's cabin served as an outpost for several years before becoming abandoned. In 1837, General Andrew Jackson founded and commanded the First Brigade of Union soldiers known as "Jackson's brigade" during his military campaign against Robert E Lee and his Confederate army at First Bull Run outside Richmond, Virginia. After General Jackson's victory at First Bull Run, he ordered his brigade to march to Tupelo where they relieved General Beauregard's Louisiana Regiment who had withdrawn to safety at Corinth Bridge prior to battle. Afterfontainry Siege in 1865 (during which Fort Donelson was captured), Tupelo residents took part in jubilant celebrations along with other Mississippians when Ulysses S Grant arrived with news of their capitulation less than three miles away from their homes on July 4th 1865. In post-World War II times, many families left Tupelo for better opportunities elsewhere due to various factors such as droughts, high unemployment rates and discriminatory practices by local officials toward African Americans such as housing discrimination and total segregation through zoning laws passed between 1945-1950%. However, some stayed until afterlections into white households began because there were no available black homes or businesses within walking distance of any major shopping center or downtown areas; this contributed to an overall decrease in population over time since most blacks relocated out of state following desegregation efforts beginning around 1960%. Today there are about 14 black families living in incorporated parts of Hinds County including Garden City (populated primarily by African American professionals) and Clinton Township (populated primarily by grand old men).
