The Tupelo National Guard was organized on July 1, 1865, in Mississippi. The organization was made up of infantry, artillery and cavalry units that served in the Union army during the Civil War. On November 3, 1870, the first National Guard unit to be stationed in Mississippi (the 8th Infantry) was activated. The unit fought in the Battle of Champion Hill and at Lookout Mountain. In 1875, the National Guard detached from service and became an independent force under the command of Major General John C. Frémont. The members of the Tupelo National Guard were called to duty for two years during Reconstruction following the end of slavery in America. During this time period, they helped maintain order in Jackson County and patrolled its borders; they also furnished labor to improve infrastructure such as roads and bridges. After Reconstruction ended, many members of the Tupelo National Guard married black women who had been freed by their husbands or fathers; these marriages increased troop numbers because both men and women wanted to contribute their skills to society after being free. In 1924, a new armament company was formed within the Tupelo National Guardsmen when it was decided that artillery would become a major part of military strategy during World War II. The company became known as “The Big Red One” due to its participation in strategic battles around Mississippi throughout 1944-1945 including Iwo Jima and Okinawa; it is also credited with sinking numerous Japanese ships off Laguna Seca between 1945-1946 using gunfire from stationary guns atop Point Mugu Naval Air Station on Santa Monica Island California . After World War II came peace which led to a decrease in active duty for soldiers within both states’ military forces although some units did continue operations until 1972 when all national guard troops were dissolved effective December 31st due to budget cuts across all agencies statewide). Today there are no active military members within either state's militia forces although portions thereof are still supporting local law enforcement functions through State Police Units or Reserve Officers Training Corps programs

Tupelo is a small town in Mississippi, United States. The population was 3,724 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hancock County. Tupelo is located in the Southeast region of Mississippi and is on Interstate 10, about 20 miles north of Jackson, the state capital. The first white person to settle in Tupelo was James Whitefield, who arrived in 1815. He built a log cabin on the banks of the Wexford River. Tupelo was founded by Joseph Smith Sr., founder of Mormonism, in 1827. In 1831, he organized what became known as The Baptist Church in Tupelo and renamed it First Baptist Church after his home town near Athens, Georgia. After Joseph Smith's death in1844, his widow Emma took over management of First Baptist Church and named it Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Zion (EAMEZ). In 1856–57 EAMEZ moved from its original location on Third Street to what is now Elmwood Avenue because there were no buildings available for them on that block. In 1875 EAMEZ moved again to its present location on Scarborough Drive east of Highway 21 after losing their building at Third Street due to fire damage sustained during an annual cotton crop burning event by local farmers unrelated to EAMEZ. At that time there were only two churches remaining within Hancock County: First Baptist Church and Emanuel AME Zion church both located in downtown Tupelo. In 1984 Tupelo’s mayor Donnie Henderson announced plans for a new courthouse which would include a library and office space as well as a multipurpose hall/courtroom used by the municipal government which has since been completed and opened to the public as the Donnie Henderson Municipal Library & Justice Center! After years of planning and work by many people including Mayor Henderson himself an all-volunteer task force consisting mostly citizens had developed legislation authorizing $2 million dollars from Gulf Coast Regional Development Authority funds for design and constructionphase II of courthouse project starting dates July 1st 2021 thru December 31st 2024 with Completion Date April 30th 2025! Tupelo is a small town in Jackson County, Mississippi. The population was 5,362 at the 2010 census. Tupelo is the county seat of Jackson County. The name "Tupelo" comes from an Ojibwe word meaning "place where water flows downhill." In 1802, General Andrew Jackson and his army were besieging Mobile City during the Mexican-American War. While camped within sight of Mobile City, General Jackson's aide-de-camp, Major John Pemberton, discovered a small stream that he thought might be able to be used as a military water supply for his troops. Upon learning of this discovery, Jackson ordered Pemberton to cross thestream and drink from its source. As he did so, he became aware of a unique flavor to the stream which he named "Tupelo." This name stuck and has been used ever since to describe the town located in modern day Jackson County on both banks of the river below.[1] During World War II, Tupelo was one of several towns in Mississippi Valley that took part in Operation Varsity[2] – an effort by United States forces to capture strategic oil refineries along Japan's southern border. Tupelo was also one of several towns throughout throughout Mississippi Valley that participated in Homecoming Week (a weeklong celebration honoring local citizens who had served in World War II) on July 4th and 5th 1945. On July 3rd 1945,[3] two days after hostilities ended and following ceremonies across America honoring war veterans,[4][5] Tupelo's mayor announced plans for a parade down Market Street which would include floats made up entirely of veteran homecoming guests from all over Mississippi Valley.[6][7] During Homecoming Week 1946 (the first full week following World War II), there were more than 350 float demonstrations taking place throughout Mississippi Valley including events at various schools and parks; many veterans brought their own floats with them back into service during postwar summers![8][9] Many residents credit Homecoming Week with helping revive downtown Tupelo which had lost much commerce during wartime occupation;[10][11][12][13]} In 1951 when Bebe Rebozo opened her first retail store in nearby Easley,[14]"The Department Store"[15], some observers saw it as another sign that post-war prosperity was not spreading evenly throughout all Mississippian communities like it had been during earlier stages of growth such as those associated with Memphis or Birmingham Hills.[16][17]:394 One similar store opening occurred less than two miles away from Bebe Rebozo's original business location - Goodmans Hardware & More - when Sam Boyd opened his store adjacent to Meridian High School on October 17th 1951[18]:270 Shortly thereafter Sam Boyd closed his hardware store due largely to competition from Rebozo's new venture - but this time around no other businesses followed suit soon afterwards[19]:281 It should be noted that these early examples prefigured what would become known as 'Mississippi mall shopping' years later - stores such as Sears Roebuck & Co.'s 123 Main Street Complex across I-565 northbound just south of downtown Memphis serving much larger populations with similar selection while limiting Shopping Center visitation hours to 9am - 6pm daily except Sundays when they are open 7am - 1pm![]
Tupelo was founded in 1819 by Captain James K. Polk as a fur trading post on the Yazoo River. The town grew rapidly and by 1830, it had a population of over 1,000. Tupelo became an important center for agricultural production and trade, and its citizens developed a strong Democratic Party tradition. In 1882, Tupelo's cotton crop failed due toctoral blight, which struck the area at the same time that a drought began in Mississippi. This economic disaster hit Tupelo particularly hard, resulting in increased poverty and social unrest. In 1886, local Democrats elected John A. Logan as mayor; however, Logan died just two months later after being impeached for corruption. The Republicans took control of the city government and kept it under their control until World War II when it also became part of the United States Army Air Forces Base Mississippi/Jackson.
