Tupelo, Mississippi is a small town in the Delta region of Mississippi. The population was 5,826 at the 2010 census. Tupelo has been a slaveholding community for centuries and the military deployment of gift history to the town began in 1879. The first military deployment to Tupelo was an American Civil War veterans' reunion that took place on April 12-13, 1879. A group of Confederate veteran's from nearby Meridian were brought to Tupelo by then Mayor J.D. Payne and First Sergeant James Whitehead of Company K, 2nd Regiment Mississippi Volunteer Infantry. The reunion was intended as an educational opportunity for citizens of Tupelo who had not seen or interacted with Confederate veterans during the war period. In 1961, Tupelo became part of the newly created Jackson County when it was split off from Rankin County.
