Tupelo, Mississippi is a small town located in Jackson County, Mississippi. The population of Tupelo was 9,813 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest city in Jackson County and the second-smallest municipality in Mississippi. Tupelo is bordered by Meridian to the north, Saginaw to the east, Brookhaven to the south and west, and Gulfport to the northwest. The first people who lived in what is now Tupelo were Paleo-Indians who hunted deer and other game near present day Meridian. They built moccasin lodges on a bluff overlooking the river where they gathered shellfish and collected driftwood for their fires. In 1814 Major General Andrew Jackson's army passed through this area while campaigning against Native Americans and found evidence of early white settlement including dwellings made from logs, earthworks and brush piles dating back to 1810-12. A post office was established at Tupelo in 1816 under name of "Moses". The town developed rapidly as Methodists began coming here from nearby Meridian for religious services in 1830. By 1840 there were over 200 settlers living here with cotton plantations working around them using slaves as labor tenants or sharecroppers until 1865 when all slavery was abolished throughout America by Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation which ended Reconstruction in America (see Ulysses S Grant). The first school was established in 1836 at a location now known as Old Market Square by Reverend James Crain with nine students attending daily classes during weekdays only because there wasn't enough space on Fridays for all those attending church services (the original school building still stands today). Church members used an old millrace that ran through downtown as well as private homes for schooling purposes until it became necessary to build a new school on its present site between 1863 and 1865 due to overcrowding atcentered schools across Mississippi (see also: Troup High School). The cornerstone ofpresent day Greenville Drive Baptist Church was laid on November 12th 1865 by Confederate General John Pemberton during his visitto Tupelo after winning Battle of Corinth Bridge against Union forces commanded by UlyssesS Grant. In 1870s cotton prices went up causing many farmers to abandon their plantations which caused some families to move out into towns such as Meridian or Starkville making way for large numbers of African Americans who had been brought over from Africa via slave ships during Reconstruction period (see also: Migration). Many residents left Tupelo when news arrived that malaria pandemic had struck America causing death rates among black citizens double what they'd experienced before; however most moved back once it died down (See: Black Migration).
