Starkville is a city in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 25,851 at the 2010 census. Starkville is one of the largest cities in Hinds County and one of two cities (the other being Jackson) with a combined population over 100,000. It is also the county seat for Hinds County. The area that now makes up Starkville was first settled by African Americans in 1847 after they were freed from slavery in Alabama. The city's first post office was established in 1855 and its first mayor was John Crouch Jr.. In 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House near here and many slaves within the Union army were brought here to work as laborers on plantations surrounding the town. Soon afterward, most of the black residents had moved away or been enslaved again. In 1870, a group of white businessmen organized into an agricultural society called "The First National Agricultural Society" to improve local soil and help farmers grow crops more efficiently and afford better prices for their products statewide. The society bought land around what is now Starkville from some of Mississippi's poorest farmers and built several large farmhouses there. Over time, this group became known as "The Olde timers." They raised cotton until it became an expensive commodity to produce due to lack of acreage; then they turned their attention to corn farming which continued until World War I when they stopped growing corn altogether because it would have been too costly to export product overseas using railroads.) In 1925, J A & M Manufacturing Company opened its plant on Eagle Ford Boulevard in what is now downtown Starkville; it produced tractors and other agricultural equipment until 1981 when it closed down due to economic decline throughout southeastern Michigan region). In 1907, Mayor Sessions wanted to rename downtown Starkville after Confederate General Robert E Lee but delayed because of objections from some residents who felt that such an honor would only lead to further conflict within the community over history differences. After much public outcry and pressure from local leaders, Mayor Sessions finally changed course and designated downtown as "The Point" in honor of General Lee's homecoming at Point Lookout National Battlefield two years earlier that year. Starkville experienced significant growth during World War II due to its strategic location midway between Jackson County (to our north) and Vicksburg (to our south). Many factories were built in or near downtown during this time including Ford Motor Company’s plant which employed thousands of workers during World War II; military housing developments such as Bradley Manor also sprung up throughout downtown; while many small businesses closed during wartime due to lack of customers or competition from larger stores statewide . Downtown also saw heavy post-war traffic with merchants opening new stores all along East Pearl Street/Downtown Drive . However by 1951 there was only about 50 active businesses remaining in downtown compared to over 1,000 before World War II . Many properties which once housed commercial tenants have since been demolished including The Strand Store building which still stands vacant today; while other buildings such as Mrs King’s Hotel / movie theater have been remodeled into apartments or condos
