Naval forces have been a part of Starkville since the early 1800s. The USS Constitution, a United States Navy ship, was launched in 1819 and served throughout the American Revolutionary War. In the 1830s, Capt. John Ladd founded the first cotton gin in Starkville. The town was renamed for him in 1876. From 1811 to 1865, USS Mississippi (BB-4) was stationed at anchor off the town's wharf. In 1898, during World War I, USS Maine (LST-5) collided with HMS Devonshire (D37) near Starkville and sunk both vessels. The town became an official Naval Base on October 15th of that year. After World War II ended, NAS Starkville closed its doors in 1951 and residents were given permission to return home on January 1st of that year. During the Korean War, NAS Starkville played a large role by providing security for US forces operating in South Korea. It reopened again after hostilities ceased on July 27th of that year. Today NAS Starkville is home to several military installations including an Air Force Station and Missile Range as well as two Coast Guard stations which provide support for local maritime activity such as Search and Rescue missions and law enforcement operations
