It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The first permanent white settler in Starkville was Hugh Witherspoon in 1821. He and his family were tenants on land belonging to General James Folsom. In 1827, Witherspoon married Miss Maynard and set up home on the present site of the city limits of Starkville which he had purchased from Folsom for $100 cash. At that time, Hinds County was still part of Mississippi Territory ruled by a "Senate Committee". Starkville is a city in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 6,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Jackson County and the second-largest city in Mississippi after Gulfport. Starkville was founded on December 8, 1819 by surveyors from Kentucky as a landing for transportation to Natchez on the Mississippi River. The original site of Starkville was near present-day Harrisonburg. The first post office in Starkville was established on December 8, 1819. In 1821, the town became a part of Jackson County when it was created from parts of Baldwin and Livingston counties. In 1835, Starkville incorporated as a city under an act of the General Assembly. On May 15, 1865, during Confederate raids against Union forces in Jackson County, two buildings in downtown were destroyed by fire; this event is known as the Battle of Starkville. In 1930–31 (the last full year for which complete federal data are available), Starkville had an estimated population of 10,000; however this number decreased to 5,876 by 1940 because World War II led to a decrease in travel and business activity throughout Mississippian cities due to their involvement in war production camps across the state. Afterward there has been little change noted until recent years when there have been increases seen due mainly to annexation by nearby towns such as Biloxi and Gulfport which have since increased their populations even more than Starkville did before them

In 1865, the Union army destroyed Confederate forces in the Battle of Starkville, ending the war in Mississippi.
