The Starkville, Mississippi branch of the United States Military Academy (USMA) was founded in 1814. The school is a four-year institution, and offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate degrees. It has a history dating back to 1814, when it was established as an academy for cadets from Mississippi Territory.
Starkville is a town in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 5,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. Starkville is named after General James Stark, an American Revolutionary War hero and member of the Tennessee Volunteers who fought in the Battle of Yorktown. The first post office in Starkville was established on July 12, 1857, and was known as "New Orleans." In 1860, when Mississippi became a slave state, all white people in Hinds County were required to leave for fear that they would be taken away and sold into slavery. Many black people left their homes to find new opportunities elsewhere in the Union states during this time period. As a result of this forced migration, many African Americans began assimilating into white society and adopting new names. In 1881, General John Moultrie purchased 2½ miles (3 km) of land east of present-day Starkville from Andrew Henderson for $600. Moultrie renamed his new community "Starkville" after General James Stark's old stomping ground in Tennessee. He built a small frame courthouse there and began farming what is now Hinds County although he still resided in Nashville until his death in 1895. After Moultrie's death his widow continued to operate the small farm until 1906 when it was donated to the city by her son John Auldwick III as part of aivic act designed to promote racial integration within local government buildings throughout downtown Jackson. Today's Municipal Building (opened 1921), located on State Street near First Avenue SW., houses both municipal offices for Hinds County as well as City Hall which serves as both the seat of government for Starkville as well asJackson municipality overall. The first school building erected in Starkville was built on what is now Mission Baptist Church Road about 1900 by Drayton Witherspoon who served as its first teacher and principal until 1902 when he moved onto another teaching assignment at Indianola High School where he remains today long after that school closed down due to financial difficulties caused by prohibitionism following World War I In 1907 Andrew Henderson donated two acres (0 vector) north of present-day Harrison Street NW., along Hull Avenue NW., lot #5D6A7B4E9C1F2F6BCB8B2E9MCDC which later became home to Stroud Elementary School which operated from 1927-1929 before being replaced with Godfrey Middle School which operated from 1930-1932 before finally closing due to lack of enrollment . In 1932 Mrs Hargrave donated three more blocks west off Harrison Street Northwest corner lot #5D6A7B4E9C1F2F6BCB8B2E9MCDC comprising Block 1 containing school building #5D6A7B4E9C1F2F6BCB8B2E9MCDC; Block 2 also containing school building #5D6A7B4E9C1F2F6BCB8B2E9MCDC; Blocks 3 & 4 also containing garage & workshop spaces . From these donations Mr Hargrave received approximately 40% ownership interest (~$2700)Twice yearly taxes were assessed against these properties netting him ~$1800 annually In 1937 Mrs Hargrake gifted two more blocks west off Harrison Street Northwest corner lot #5D6A7B4EA3BEBFDCBB123426CDFC consisting Block 1containing school building No.#AE3BEBFDCBB123426CDFC;Block 2 alsocontainingschoolbuilding No.#AE3BEBFDCBB123426CDFC; Blocks 3& 4alsocontaininggarage &workshop spaces). From these giftsMrs Hargrake received approximately 60% ownership interest (~$3600)Twice yearly taxes were assessed against these properties netting her ~$2400 annually resulting thenin an annual income amountingto $3600 or nearly $1500 per year attributable solely to her gift& donation(s).
