Airforce One is a Boeing 747-400 model which was delivered to the Starkville Air Force Base in Jackson, Mississippi on November 5, 1991. It served as the primary aircraft at the base until it was retired on October 14, 2003. The plane had a variously coloured camouflage and markings which included an orange band above the cockpit for operational use. On December 8, 2002, an F-15E Strike Eagle from RAF Fairford flew over Starkville to pay respects to the jet before its retirement from service. The plane carried a plaque reading “In memory of Men of War: RAF Fairford – February 9th 1971 – October 14th 2003”. The first turboprop military transport helicopter squadron in the United States was activated at Starkville AFB on July 1, 1951 under command of 2nd Lt. Scott Akins with North American P-51D Mustangs operated by Tenth Air Force (Tenth AF). This unit disbanded on August 31, 1955 when it became apparent that helicopters were not going to be used as extensively in USAF operations during the Korean War due to their limited range and survivability compared to piston aircraft. The last helicopter squadron inactivation at Starkville AFB was HMM-123 on September 15, 1979 when its pilots left for other assignments worldwide.
