Southaven is a city in Butler County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 3,607 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. Southaven is located on the bank of the Tunica River and straddles the border of Butler and Newton counties. The river forms the municipal boundaries for both cities. The first permanent settler in what became Southaven was James Dillard who arrived in 1814 from Tennessee. He erected a log cabin on a bluff overlooking the Tunica River. In 1830, John Beall founded Bealltown on land he purchased from Dillard; it became an important cotton-growing center during this time. In 1851, Jno. Pritchett moved to what became Southaven after purchasing two hundred acres (10 km2) of land along the river from James Fenton; Pritchett built a large brick courthouse andresidential district that remains standing today. In 1857, Andrew Johnson ordered General Nathan Bedford Forrest to move his cavalry troops northward across Mississippi to Django's Last Stand near present day Greenville before they could be bottled up by Confederate forces at Corinth.. When Confederate forces reached town late that night local residents hid their supplies under some houses until morning when they were able to pry them open and remove all food and ammunition before fleeing into Union lines.. One resident reported seeing "a long line of cavalrymen coming downriver towards us...I thought I saw General Forrest himself going downriver with them". In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewing burned most of downtown Southaven after Union forces burned several plantations upstream; this event is sometimes cited as starting the war in America known as "The War Between The States". On July 5th 1861 Abraham Lincoln signed an Order No 189 appointing Major General George Thomas as commanderof Memphis District Command which included all northern states east of Arkansas including Mississippi; this order authorized Thomas to march southward through Meridian and Natchez Regionsand burn any cotton crops or buildings found without proper permits/licenses which would cause social unrest among plantation ownerswesterners had been trying to do since May 1861 while southern planters had been refusingto allow emancipation because it would impact their revenues too much.. On October 15th 1861 Major General Gustavus Wofford arrived at Meridian with 1 brigade (7 regiments),1 artillery battalion (9 guns), 1 company Troop A & B Connecticut Volunteers Infantry Regiment – transferred from Fort Sumter – also proceeded southwards burning any cotton crops or buildings found without proper permits/licenses until he reached Prairie du Chien where he rendezvoused with Union troops led by Ulysses S Grant.. This event began what are known as "The Great Cotton Fire"in which over 100 square miles (240 km2) were burned creating one of history's largest fires ever controlled by human hands
