In 1860, the first policeman in Southaven was hired. The man who came to be known as the "Father of Police Department" was Capt. James W. Hill. Hill began his career as a private detective and then became an officer with the Mississippi State Police. In 1881, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and served until 1902 when he retired because of age. Hill's retirement marked the beginning of a new era for Southaven police department. The department had several officers during Hill's time but they were not able to keep up with the growth of the city. After Hill's retirement, Lt. Jens Rasmussen took over as captain and directed the department through its early years while also serving as mayor from 1903-1905 and 1907-1909. During Rasmussen's tenure, there were many important changes that occurred within the department including: In 1916, Sgt. John Fenton joined the force and soon became one of Southaven’s most famous officers due to his work in combating crime on local streetsides throughout town during this time period called “The Golden Age of Police Department Administration." Detective Sgt Fenton is credited with helping to make Southaven one of America’s safest cities during this time period by providing quality public service which has helped it maintain its ranking among America’s largest cities today." Fenton left Southaven in 1933 after only two years on duty whenWorld War II started and never returned to serve in uniform again; however he continued working as a detective until his death at age 82 in 1984."

Southaven is a town in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,547 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The name "Southaven" comes from an English word meaning "headquarters." It was once a small community of about 100 residents and now has a population of over 2,000 people. The history of Southaven goes back to 1814 when it was founded by James Caldwell as Caldwell's Creek Settlement on the banks of the Tennessee River. On December 6, 1814, it became known as Southaven after General Andrew Jackson's victory over Native Americans at Hernando De Soto's battle at Mobile Bay. In 1819, Southaven was renamed for Senator John Cushing (R-Mississippi) after he helped to pass the Indian Removal Act which removed all Cherokee and Chickasaw Indians from Alabama and Georgia. The town had a total population of 501 in 1830 when it lost its status as a township but regained it due to increased agricultural production that followed cotton planting in this region during the 1830s and 1840s. The first school in Southaven was built in 1825 on what is now State Street by Nathaniel Shreve who also built courthouse and jail there. A subscription school opened in 1830 for white students with Revivals sponsoring religious services each weeknight; these schools closed around 1865 when African American students started attending them instead because they were not subject to such segregation then. After Reconstruction ended in 1865, most southern whites moved out of the Deep South while African Americans remained behind until after World War II when they began moving into areas vacated by southern whites up north during that era’s “ Migration Period”

In recent years, Southaven has seen significant growth due to its central location within Jackson County and its role as a major local economic engine. This growth has led to new development including a large shopping mall located just outside of town called The Mall of America; multiple hospitals including Regional Medical Center Hospital; several hundred apartments; and more than 20 businesses including four restaurants and eight storespace(). As an important community hub for many years now, Southaven continues to play an essential role in regional commerce as well asJackson County's social life - hosting numerous cultural events throughout the yearincluding annual Fourth of July fireworks displays over the riverfront parade ground; monthly arts & crafts shows at Community Hall; annual golf tournaments staged at various points along University Avenue near downtownSouthaven;and more recently becoming home to three high school campuses: Pleasant Grove High School (established in 1957), Jacksonville Technical High School (opened in 1997), and Southern Miss College Preparatory Academy (opened in 2006).
