Southaven is a town in Harrison County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 7,895 at the 2010 census. Southaven is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1871 by James C. Dorsey and named for Major General Andrew J. Southaven, who had served as a colonel in the Union army during the American Civil War. The first store in Southaven opened on Main Street in 1872. In 1901, Mrs. Lilla Achelous donated land to develop into what is now known as Downtown Southaven. The city of Jackson annexed portions of Harrison County in 1912 and 1913 respectively and renamed it Jackson Heights; however, most residents continued to call their town Southaven until 1938 when they voted to change their name to Jackson Township because of its location withinJackson Heights Municipality boundaries). In 1936, the Federal government offered $1 million for the development of an airfield near Southaven that would be used by bombers during World War II; however, no offer was made after local businessmen refused to contribute money to the project without guarantees that their own towns would not become targets of bombing raids from planes flown by Nazi Germany or Japan. It wasn't until 1954 when then-Senator John F Kennedy announced his candidacy for President on a platform supporting open skies policies which were designed to stop allied bombing raids over America's mainland; this led to increased interest in developing an airport within reach of southven since JFK's announcement brought attention away from cities like Tokyo and New York City which were being bombed nightly at night by Japanese forces (and also drawing public attention away from smaller communities such as Jacksonville) ). After years of discussion between developers and officials with both Roosevelt National Airport Corporation (now Delta Air Lines) and state aviation officials withinJackson Heights Municipality (who favored setting up a more centralized airport control structure withinJackson Township), plans were approved for construction on what would eventually become Delta Air Lines' current facility –Southaven Municipal Airport – beginning operations on July 1, 1957! Today’s downtown core includes nine buildings/apartments built between 1909-1914: First Methodist Episcopal Church (built 1907), Glynn Hotel & Convention House (built 1915), Old State House Annexes No 2 & 3 (both built 1914), Cash Register Building (1921), Blockbuster Video Arcade Building No 6(1973), new jail constructed 1970s & 1980s & First Baptist Church erected 1893 are among significant landmarks located downtown today... Additionally several businesses have moved into or reopened inside older buildings downtown over time including: Powell’s Department Store(1892-1994); Coca Cola Bottling Plant (1920-2007); Whitehall Hardware Store(1911-1997); MBI Bank(1963-present). Many other small businesses dotting the landscape continuously provide services including: Midas Pizza(1969-present); ExxonMobil Refinery Service Station(1975-2005); Walmart Supercenter(1995-)..
