Southaven is a city in Marshall County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 12,541 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. Southaven is home to the Marshall County Museum and History Complex and the Southaven Civic Center. The town has been settled by Paleo-Indians since Prehistoric times. A post office called "Southaven" was first established in 1854, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1916. The town's name comes from an early settler, Samuel Southaven, who named his property "Southaven" after his native England. In 1892, John Sibley built a small log courthouse on what is now Main Street. This courthouse became known as the "Old Courthouse." In 1907, Jeptha Blake donated land to form what would become Park Avenue Cemetery which included current Old Courthouse site as well as homes on both sides of Park Avenue where today's Senior Citizens' Home resides In 1912 W.C.(Wesley Clark) Bowen donated land for a new high school which would be called Meridian High School (now Meridian Junior/Senior High School). The $10 thousand donation made Park Avenue one of the most generous gifts ever given to a local institution in Mississippi during that time frame In 1954, when Marshall County formed its government under statehood, it merged with Jackson County and Southaven became part of Jackson Township within that county limits Marshall County moved out of downtown Jackson into new buildings located on State Street between Grand Gulf Boulevard and Harrison Road in 1966 whileJackson Township continued to live behind its old walls until 1993 when they were taken down completely due to cost overruns associated with their renovation project

Southaven is a city in Axtell County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,574 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Axtell County. The city was founded in 1875 by John Southaven and his wife Sally. It became an incorporated municipality in 1907. The city's current name comes from its location on the levee that forms the border between Mississippi and Alabama. According to one source, southaven means "land of blackberries" in an Atlantean language used before white settlement. Southaven is located at (36.857368, -93.577902). Ulysses S Grant birthplace is located nearby to the east and south-east of Southaven proper on US 90/Maine Road which runs concurrently with US 90/Mississippi Highway 15 for about . According to the 2010 census, it has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,419 people, 553 households, and 388 families residing in the city. The population density was 739 people per square mile (291/km²). There were 671 housing units at an average density of 309 per square mile (121/km²). The racial makeup of Southaven was 98% White; 0% African American; 0% Native American; 2% Asian; and 2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latinoof any race were 3%,
In the 1830s, the area around Southaven was part of a Chickasaw Nation reserve. The white community of Southaven began to grow in the 1840s as cotton plantations were developed in this area. In 1853, Confederate General Robert E. Lee moved his headquarters from Petersburg, Virginia to what is now Monroe County, Alabama, and appointed General James F. Hood as commander of his Corps of Engineers. As a result, Southaven became known as "Hood's Landing." In 1865, Union soldiers burned down the town after discovering that Confederate forces were stockpiling supplies there. This event is also associated with the Battle of Jackson Heights where Union troops defeated Confederate forces by occupying Jackson Heights and destroying most of their stockpiles. Southaven continued to be an important community until it was forced toicken during World War II when it was taken over by Japanese forces. After the war, it reverted back to its original name and population before slowly dying off over time. Today, there are only a few small buildings remaining in Southaven which are used for storage or as tourist attractions.
