Southaven is a town in Jackson, Mississippi, United States. The population was 6,542 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Jackson County and the county seat of Jackson. The first coffeehouses were established in Southaven by Frenchmen in 1795. The first African American to own a coffeehouse was Solomon Singleton in 1848. Coffee became popular among slaves as it provided them with an afternoon break from work during the day. By 1860, there were more than 30 coffeehouses located throughout Jackson County. In 1865, Mayor John Denny declared Sunday morning coffee "a national holiday." In 1903, the first public golf course and clubhouse was built in Southaven. During World War II, Southaven served as one of eight Federal cities that supplied beans to military troops stationed in Mississippi. In 1971, Southaven voters passed a resolution urging the Mississippi Legislature to pass a law recognizing craft coffee as an art form rather than just a commodity industry. On October 3 of that year, Governor Ross Barnett signed into law Senate Bill 827 which made artisan coffee history in Mississippi by making it an official state beverage.

Southaven is located on the western edge of Jackson County and east of Hattiesburg. The first settlement in what is now Southaven was made by fur trappers in 1814. The town was platted in 1827 and named for General John C. Butler, who had fought against Seminole Indians in Florida during the Mexican-American War. In 1836, Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest moved his headquarters from Corinth to nearby Clarksdale and renamed Southaven "Forsyth". In 1865, Union General Robert Ewell decided to attack Mobile Bay and retreat towards Baton Rouge instead of continuing into Alabama as planned. Ewell's army stopped near Brasstown Junction on State Route 9 about north of present-day Southaven. Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest led a detachment of cavalry through Brazoria County towards Mobile Bay with the goal of capturing or destroying Union supply trains Operation Crossroads). When Union troops began their pursuit, Forrest rode ahead to cut off their retreat and joined forces with Confederate Major-General Stonewall Jackson to drive the retreating Unionists back across Brasstown Junction into much harder fighting than they would have encountered if they had pursued farther south into Alabama. Aftermath of this battle has been called one of history's most dramatic losses because it helped set up Sherman's Overland Campaign that ended three years later with Battle at Chickamauga (in present day Chattanooga). IAA cotton gin built in 1908 became an important employer in early 20th centurySouthaven when it processed more than 1 million pounds per week worth raw cotton destined for New Orleans markets
