The history of the Army in Southaven, Mississippi goes back to 1862. The area now includes part of Jackson County and was initially known as Indian Territory. When the Confederate States of America was created, the southwestern corner of Mississippi became its territory. The Union army invaded this region in 1861, but were quickly driven back by Confederate resistance. In 1865, after the war ended, the Union army moved into what is now Jackson County and established a military garrison there. This continued until 1872 when it was disbanded due to budget cuts by President Ulysses S. Grant. However, it wasn’t until 1907 that Southaven received its own post office. As the population grew in Southaven during the late 1800s, so too did interest in joining or serving in the military; however, there were few opportunities for citizens to do so because no branch of service offered a large salary or benefits compared to civilian life at that time. In 1916, however, after World War I ended and Congress passed legislation authorizing soldiers on active duty for five years to receive veterans benefits (similar to benefits currently available to civilians), General John Jourdan decided to establish an Army Post Office within town limits (an act which also spawned Southaven’s current nickname “Jourdan’s Arsenal”). With growing wartime activity across all aspects of society – from manufacturing and agriculture southward through services such as banking and shipping – it was only natural for businesses within town limits related to soldiering or warfare to grow rapidly over time. By 1922, there existed a barracks complex within town limits housing about 100 enlisted men and their families as well as an adjacent store/ballet hall used by infantrymen on leave between encampments/ deployments around town (known today as Gadsden Mall). With these activities along with other civic events taking place frequently throughout town such as fairs and dances – many attended by both soldiers and their families – residents came together more regularly during peacetime than they had ever before done throughout history! There are still instances where members of the military display patriotism outside their homes while deployed; however most interactions occur when servicemen visit local businesses or schools on their way home from missions/training overseas. Southaven is a city in Marshall County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 11,827 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Marshall County. Southaven is part of the Jackson, Mississippi Micropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1836 by Elijah Parish White and others as a post office on land that would later become Jackson. The first settler to arrive in what would become Southaven was Fenton Moulton, who arrived in 1837. In 1840–41, General Asahel Price moved his family from Tennessee to what is now Southaven and began trading goods with the Indians near present-day Greenville. In 1845, Confederate Major General Pemberton ordered General Nathan Bedford Forrest to march on Corinth with 1,500 soldiers and burn all that he could find there. Forrest's pursuit caused great destruction and many northern residents fled south into Jackson County for safety; some returned when it became clear that no military action would take place against them. On July 20 of that year (1845), white citizens ofJackson County meeting under the auspices of theirchurch voted unanimously to secede fromMississippi due to economic concerns about racial unrest following Pemberton's order burning homes and businesses without first giving warning or compensation to those caught up in firefighting efforts; this event is commonly referred to as "The October Crisis". In 1846–47 James Kenedy built a dam across the Pearl River at what is now called Bowie Lake for irrigation purposes; this led directly to increased competition among settlers for water rights which caused farm prices to increase rapidly and necessitated new construction along Highway 49 through town center; these structures include a Masonic Lodge (built 1889) still standing today as well as several churches including One Presbyterian Church (built 1865). By 1850, cotton mills had come into operation around town while brickyards were established north of downtown; during this time also significant amounts of lumber were produced here for use throughout central Kentucky and southern Indiana. In 1860–61 Union troops burned most of downtownsouthaven after learning about local plans for secessionist activities; following this event only two buildings remained standing within downtown limits: an old courthouse turned jail (now known as State Capitol Complex) and First Baptist Church which had been built four years earlier on land donated by Jesse Jarnes Sr.; both structures have been rebuilt over time using modern techniques but remain largely unaltered from their original appearance. When the first army was formed in 8th century BC there was no specific plan for how it would be organized. Soldiers were recruited from all around the world and usually served for a short amount of time before being disbanded. Southaven was established in 1819 as a plantation town in the American Mississippi Territory. The town was named for General Andrew Jackson, who served as its first mayor. Southaven grew rapidly during Jackson's presidency and by 1828 it had developed into an important port on the Yazoo River. During Jackson's second term as president, he moved the U.S. Embassy from Paris to Southaven and built a new Capitol building there. In 1865, Confederate troops burned down Southaven but were driven out by Union forces three years later. After the Civil War, Southaven became an important slave-holding community and saw heavy population growth until the late 19th century when cotton production decreased and white flight began to occur. Since then, Southaven has been slowly lost to development and is now a largely abandoned community with few remaining buildings or objects of historical significance.
In 1821, a group of white men from Southaven formed the Third Mississippi Company to purchase land in what is now Jackson, Mississippi. They named their company after Andrew Jackson, the first U.S. president and also the founder of the United States. The men traveled to Illinois and Indiana to find buyers for their land and returned in 1824 with a tract of land that included present-day Jackson.
