The Southaven Air Force Base is home to the Mississippi Air National Guard's 97th Airlift Wing and the 609th Airlift Squadron, both of which are part of the United States Air Force. The wing has a long history dating back to World War II, when it was established as the 325th Bombardment Group at Dowdy Field in Jackson, Mississippi. It merged with the 915th Bombardment Group on 1 January 1942 to form the 514th Bombardment Group. Inactivated on 8 May 1945 at Davis-Monthan AFB in Arizona due to budget constraints. reactivated on 1 July 1946 at Dowdy Field as an operational unit and redesignated 970th Bombardment Wing. On 15 October 1948, it was transferred fromactivations to permanent assignment to Southaven AFB as one of two Tactical Aerospace Forces wings (the other being Love Field AF). The wing received its first Lockheed C-130A Hercules aircraft on 1 July 1951 and became fully equipped with Boeing 707 aircraft on 1 September 1955. The wing began operations of Convair CRJ-10s in 1957 and took over turboprop flights from Dyersburg Municipal Airport beginning on 30 October 1958; this gave us our current nickname--"The Flying Falcons." In 1974, squadron assets were reassigned from Dowdy Field (USAF) to Selma Army Airport (ARMY) after active duty USAF personnel working at Selma Municipal Airport refused to move their equipment due to security concerns about possible Communist infiltration into US airspace through that airport during the Vietnam War era. As a result,Southaven AFB became home base for all USAF military units located in central Mississippi; these units included: VII Fighter Command's 3rd Fighter Division stationed there until its activated status was changed To IX Bomber Command's 315th Bombardment Wing operating KC-135 Stratotankers until its activated status was changed again To III Bomber Command's 363d Troop Carrier Wing which operated C-141B Globemasters until its activation status changed again On 13 March 1984, VIII Bomber Command's 529t Troop Carrier Wing moved permanently from Love Field AFB Texas -equipped with Lockheed L-1011 Starfires -to Southaven AFB effective 27 March 1984 Upon activation IAF squadron inventory changes occurred 2/27/1984 Vickers VC8 "Hercules" Aircraft assigned uncontrollably 17/3/1984 .
