Ridgeland is a town in Quitman County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,574 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson, MS Metropolitan Statistical Area. Ridgeland was founded in 1881 by white settlers and named for General James Ridgeway (1817-1897), an American general who fought in the Mexican–American War and served as governor of Texas from 1846 to 1850. The site of present-day Ridgeland was first settled by Choctaws in 1796 and it was called Cedar Bluff because its sandstone cliffs were covered with cedar trees. In 1801, General James Kelloway's brigade under Major John Cawthon surrendered at the Battle of Palo Alto after attacking Spanish forces on their way home from Mexico City. In 1880, when Mississippi became a state, many white farmers moved into what is now Ridgeland from nearby Meridian and Starkville. They began to grow cotton and other crops, but also built log cabins and churches that remain standing today. One such church is located on Main Street just northeast of present-day Ridgeland Elementary School; it was built in 1889 by Reverend A Worthy as part of a larger project to improve hygiene among white settlers in the community. The brick building still stands and serves as a local museum today about African American life in Jackson during Reconstruction years. During World War I, Ridgeland played host to military units from all over America; within months of its founding, businesses had opened up across the street from where they currently stand to serve troops stationed there. For several years beginning in 1918*, Ridgeland functioned as an airfield providing fuel for fighter planes used by the US Army Air Service*. After hostilities ended* both facilities were used again briefly during World War II before being sold commercially* until they were abandoned completely around 1960*. As recently as 2006*, some remnants of infrastructure still remained scattered around town – most notably a small cemetery** – but these have since been removed or demolished.* Today, much like many other parts of Mississippi during this time period*, Ridgeland retains its unique character despite having undergone little changeover over time.* Its winding streets are lined withcentury-old homes ; its Log Cabin Trail winds through downtown ; and its annual corn festival brings residents together for cookouts * .
