In 1819, General Andrew Jackson moved his headquarters from Nashville to what is now Ridgeland after becoming president that year. He named the community after John C. ridgeway, an early settler in Tennessee who had served as brigadier general in Jackson's army during the American Civil War and later became a land speculator in Mississippi. In 1868, when Andrew Johnson became President of the United States and began efforts to reduce slavery throughout America, he ordered all Union states except Missouri to recognize Confederate secession as a valid act under their state constitutions. As a result of this order, many Mississippians switched sides and joined the Confederacy; however, Ridgeland remained loyal to the Union until 1861 when it seceded from Tennessee for its own independent government under James Kellar (1810-1876). During World War II much development took place here due to munitions production by V-E Day Industries which included major factory projects such as Plant No. 5 (later known as BP) along with sister plants across cotton country including Plant No 6 (later known as Shell), Plant No 8 (later known as Phillips Petroleum), and Plant No 9 (later known as US Steel). These industrial sites remain important today with many businesses headquartered there including Monsanto Company which manufactures genetically modified crops worldwide; Dow Chemical Co.; Halliburton Co.; ExxonMobil Corporation; GEICO Insurance Agency; ABC Broadcasting Company; Live Oak Coffee & Tea Inc.; Chick-fil-A Restaurants Incorporated In recent years Ridgeland has seen increased development around its downtown core with mixed used housing developments being built near riverfront parks while other neighborhoods have seen significant redevelopment such as Midtown Ridge/Midtown Square which includes new high schools and several large apartment complexes
