Ridgeland is a small town in Jackson, Mississippi. It was founded in 1881 by Andrew J. Ridgeland and his wife Lucy. The Ridgelines are the centenarians who live in the town today. The original ridgeline was built on land owned by Colonel John Smith, which he donated to the town for development. Today there are over 100 residents of Ridgeland, most of whom were born there or have lived there their whole lives. The Ridgelines are descended from planters who came to Mississippi in the 17th century. They started cultivating rice and corn in what is now Mississippi, Alabama, and Arkansas. In 1881, Andrew J. Ridgeland founded Ridgewood plantation near present-day Corinth with his brother John Davenport Ridgeland and their parents Isaac and Sarah Hinshawridge Ridgewood. They had seven children: Andrew (1850-1925), Lucy Elizabeth (1855-1937), Anna Jane (1860-1945), Clarence Randolph (1865-1927), Edwin Ladd (1868-1945),and Nellie May (1870-1963). The patriarchs worked together until 1895 when they bought out Andrew's partner John Davenport Jr.. From 1895 until 1923 they were all directors of Anna Jane's father's cotton gin company located at Pascagoula Plantation east of Corinth where textile production began during Reconstruction following the Civil War. In 1923 they soldAnna Jane's share to her brother Edwin Ladd for $1 million dollars making them both sole owners of Anna Jane’s father’s business which continued operation until it closed in 1971 after sixty years of production!'"

By 1850, Ridgeland had a population of 4,000 and it quickly grew into a major cotton center. In 1855, General Kirby Green relocated his army from Mexico to help repel Native American attacks on white settlers in central Mississippi; he chose Ridgeland as his headquarters because it was strategically located on both sides of the river. During this time period, African Americans were segregated by law within white society and did not enjoy full civil rights until after passage of the Civil Rights Actof 1964. However, overall prosperity continued until after World War II when production switched from cotton to other crops such as soybeans and corn due to technological advances.
