The story begins with World War II when the United States entered into war against Nazi Germany and America needed pilots for its fighter planes. TheAAF (Army Air Forces) enlisted bomber boys and girls from all over America to fight in what was known as “the Great War”. By the time hostilities ended, more than 2 million American airmen had fought in Europe, Asia, and Africa. Some of these men and women left behind families who had to raise children on their own. TheAAF gifted many pieces of equipment during World War II including radios, lightsabers, tanks, aircraft carriers, trucks and artillery pieces. One of the most famous gifts given by theAAF was an airplane called the Boeing B-29 Superfortress Jr., which became known as “The Flying Fortress”. When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941, America declared war on Japan! The USAAF quickly mobilized its forces and formed combat units in Alaska, Hawaii, Guam, Marianas Islands and Philippine Islands. The Japanese were surprised by Allied invasion plans and did not expect such large numbers of American troops on their home islands. On December 10th 1941 Japan completed its attack on Pearl Harbor resulting in over 100 deaths among American servicemen! The USAAF responded withOperationreadiness which included flying thousands of missions over Japan using bombers like the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress or Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighters! With so much at stake for both sides during World War II there was no room for error! After completing Operationreadiness some members of Congress decided it would be best if we deployed our servicemen abroad instead of keeping them here at home? This idea originated with Senator Claude Pepper (D-TN) who wanted to see how our servicemen could help contribute to world peace while also doing some good for our country. He introduced a bill entitled “Deployment for Democracy” which passed unanimously in both Houses of Congress! In July 1942 President Franklin D Roosevelt signed this legislation into law! From then until 1945 more than 3 million Americans served overseas including 1 million soldiers who fought in European theaters! These brave men and women sacrificed everything – their lives, families, homes – but they received back something far greater: democracy!!!
