The history of firearms in Picayune, Mississippi begins with the arrival of white men in the early 1800s. In 1814, Captain Isaac Newton arrived in what is now Picayune from Baton Rouge, Louisiana and founded a ferry company called The New Orleans and Mobile Ferry Company. He brought along his brand new rifle, which he named the "Newton." Captain Newton's rifle was used to fight Indians and protect whites on the riverbanks. One day, a group of Indian warriors saw Captain Newton's rifle and decided it was too powerful for them to handle. They ran away without taking anything else with them. In 1836, a man by the name of John Wesley Powell came through Picayune looking for land to settle down on. He happened upon an old plantation called The Oaks that belonged to General Andrew Jackson. Powell bought some land there and began building a house. His wife managed the farm while he was away at war or working on his new home. When he returned home, they had their first child—a girl named Marilla—and John Wesley Powell became her father-in-law. 3 years later, in 1841, General Andrew Jackson died at sea while Expedition No 5 was exploring nearby Alaska Territory. This left control of most of western Tennessee (including Picayune) up for grabs among various claimants including James Kenedy (the brother-in-law of Secretary of War James Buchanan). The Sequoyah County Courthouse still stands standing today as evidence thatPicayune participated in this legal dispute over territory outside Jackson's original borders during this time period! After Andrew Jackson's death Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Proctor took command of Army forces east of Memphis under orders from President Polk (the general who would eventually take America into World War I). The question "What is the name of the town in Mississippi?" has been asked by many people over the years and no definitive answer has been found. This paper will attempt to provide an answer to this question as well as give some information about Picayune itself. Prior to 1818, Picayune was known as Ettrickville (or English Point). The first white person to settle in what is now Picayune was Captain John Smith who built a cabin on land he purchased from the Choctaw Nation in 1795. He named his new location after General Andrew Jackson's unit which had just arrived from England and had camped on his plantation near present day Meridian, Mississippi. From 1818 until 1821, whenPicayune became a state of Mississippi, it lay withinChoctaw Creek Nation boundaries. In 1821, however, Alabama acquired portions of Louisiana and decided that Indian Territory should include all or parts of both states including Picayune within its limits. On January 10th 1830 Alabama proposed annexation of Choctaw nation territory east of Mobile Bay with PicayUNE being included within this proposed boundary; however this proposal was not accepted by Congress and therefore never came into effect. The first settler in what would become Picayune was Captains John Smith (1795-1848) and James Peele (1798-1847). James Peele purchased 640 acres (2 km²) along Barrancas Creek from French colonists who were leased by Pensacola entrepreneur Etienne de Lesseps for 807 acres (3 km²). This purchase opened up much valuable floodplain real estate adjacent to Barrancas Creek where cotton could be grown without irrigation water available further upstream on nearby plantations such as those owned by Roger Taney et al.. When Pensacola went bankrupt during the American Civil War Fields & Brown bought out Peele for $500/acre ($1 million today) making him one of very few white men everto own more than 50%+ acreage contiguous with any creek or river system in Mobile County... These early settlers were followed soon thereafter by other Anglo-Saxon families: Blanton, Cobb & Co., Atkins & McNeely etc., each purchasing parcels ranging anywhere from 5 - 100 acres (.22 - .86 km²)...
