Petal is a town in Rankin County, Mississippi. The population was 5,992 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Rankin County. The first settler in Petal was James Shaver, who arrived in 1821. He named his land "Shaverstown." In 1829, John Pugh settled there and built a log cabin on the banks of the Atchafalaya River. The Pughs were farmers and played an important role in early Petal history. In 1836, Samuel White settled nearby on his farm called Whiteville and began to cultivation of cotton production. He also raised livestock and served as a justice of the peace for many years. In 1865, white men from Logansport came to Petal with plans to build a railroad through Rankin County. They bought some land around Whiteville and started construction of the railroad on December 15, 1865. By 1870, most of what is now Petal had been developed as a farming community with several businesses such as stores, residences, churches and schools serving its residents.. During Reconstruction (1865-1877), Petal became one of the most active communities in Mississippi during this time period due to its location between Meridian and Jackson counties (the state's two major counties). On October 16th 1871, Mayor Gillem Aiken organized an election for members of the new State Legislature which resulted in two black men being elected to represent Petal: Wm Halsey (elected November 3rd) and John Broughton (elected December 8th). This event is often cited as marking political integration in Mississippi during this time period

Petal is a town in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,755 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1881 by John and Martha Petal. The town was named for Petal's daughter, Alma. The first post office in Petal opened in 1887. In 1909, the name of the town was changed to Meridian after Meridian Hill on which it sat. In 1916, the name of the town was again changed to Petal after petunias were grown there. The petunias are still grown there today as part of the local agricultural economy. In 1925, Petal had its own hospital and school system which closed in 2003 due to budget cuts within Hinds County government. Today only a few small businesses use the renovated buildings that house the former hospital and school systems; most residents now live elsewhere within Hinds County or outside of Petal altogether. According to historian Barrett Wiley, "Petal (town) is one of those rare cases where an early settlement results not only from natural selection but also from deliberate planning by human beings." He goes on to say that Meridian (the renamed town) may have developed because people who didn't want their land taken over by other settlers decided they would move there instead if they could get away with it since they had better farmland closer at hand. Consequently, "Meridian became both a center for trade and political activity" because it offered more space than any other village or hamlet situated near Meridian Hill; this made it difficult for anyone wanted to takeover its land so as not to lose out on valuable trade opportunities around that bend inriver." Furthermore,"petunias quickly replaced cotton crops as Orchard's primary cash crop" due to their easy production schedule combined with their low price tags." As such,"pettiness about title issues among early settlers limited development and progress throughout much of southeastern Mississippi".
