Pearl is a town in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. The town has been served by the Pearl School District since 1892. The first people to live in what is now Pearl were two brothers, Ebenezer and Solomon Hogg. They loggered on the bluff above the present-day town and sold their goods in Siloam Springs before moving downriver to what is now Pearl Creek. They named their creek after a pearl they found in an oyster they collected from Negro Island off of Alabama's Mobile Bay. In 1868, a group of white men known as the Griggs brothers bought land just east of where Pearl currently stands from General John Coker for $1,000 (). They began developing it into a small community with five homes and 30 acres (12 ha). However, within 5 years only 7 residents lived there due to disease brought over by Union troops during the American Civil War which killed many of the town's citizens. The Griggs brothers lost their land when it was taken over by Pemberton & Company for cotton plantations during Reconstruction. But theywould later regain possession of it and develop it into one of Mississippi's most distinguished towns with its own school district that still operates today. James A.Caldwell became an attorney and politician in Jackson; Sarah Broughton Caldwell taught school until her death in 1915.
