On December 3, 1903, the United States Coast Guard was organized as a separate branch of the military. At its inception, the Coast Guard consisted of only six men and two boats. The first mission of the Coast Guard was to protect American coastline from piracy. In 1912, Congress created a coast guard academy in Pearl, Mississippi to provide training for future coast guardsmen. The first class of cadets graduated in 1915. The Coast Guard has grown significantly since then with multiple service branches including the Marines and Navy. In 1959, the Coast Guard Academy merged with the Naval Reserve School at Midshipman’s Point to form one school that offers associate degree programs in both maritime and naval science disciplines. Today, there are over 6200 officers and men who serve on U.S coastsguard vessels worldwide providing support for maritime security and public safety through enforcement actions such as search and rescue missions, fisheries patrol operations, response to natural disasters such as hurricanes or earthquakes, counter-narcotics activity and more. Pearl, Mississippi is a small town in the northwestern corner of Mississippi. The population was 5,569 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The early history of Pearl may be traced to 1824 when John Sibley and his family settled in what is now Pearl after fleeing from Georgia during the Peach Rebellion. They named their farm "Sibley's Station". In 1829, they sold this land to James A. Thurston for $1,000 cash. Thurston developed it into a plantation which he called "Thurston's Landing". In1839, Andrew Lamar purchased Thurston's Landing from James A. Thurston and renamed it "Lamar's Plantation". He served as its captain from 1840 until his death in 1865. Lamar was a slaveholder who used his plantation to provide work for many slaves and free people of color throughout his lifetime. After Reconstruction ended in 1865, Lamar's Plantation was confiscated by the United States Government and became known as Indian Territory (Oklahoma). It remained in that state until it was acquired by Gulf County on April 17, 1907; then transferred to Pearl on December 3 of that year by Gulf County commissioners under Act No 7609 (1907), passed by the State Legislature at an election which also elected James Ewing Asbury as county commissioner for Pearl District #7 (now Uptown/Jackson). During World War I, pearl produced more than 1 million pounds of cotton ginned off-the-field through fishing gear set up along riverbanks adjacent to the plantations on both coasts where cotton could be picked without leaving any evidence behind except sometimes some white slag or pieces of planks left over from setting up the gins. This type of operation continued even after World War II when methods changed so production could take place ashore using mobile lighters with skimmers rather than catching fish with nets along riversides where large quantities were caught every day
